Players: Fisher is a scapegoat

Former players and present Michigan coaches showed feelings of disgust yesterday over the firing of Michigan basketball coach Steve Fisher. The news reached far beyond the Ann Arbor limits. Former Wolverines and their families from all across the nation blew steam about the way things were handled and felt sorry for the players in the post-Fisher era.

Just like old times: Third time's a charm for Michigan

The way the first quarter was going, it appeared that the cycle was going to continue. Two offsides penalties in the first six plays of the game, seven penalties overall and trouble finding the end zone from the red zone early on made it look like Michigan was still struggling to rip its albatross, Northwestern, from around its neck.

Icers upset Gophers, pummel Toronto

MINNEAPOLIS - It takes some time for a team to mature into a single, cohesive unit. For the Michigan hockey team, it seemed to take a whole period. The Wolverines won two games in their first weekend of action. After defeating Minnesota, 3-2, on Friday, the Wolverines demolished Toronto, 9-2, yesterday.

Defense will have to carry this team

You can hear them now. All the believers counting down until the Penn State game, making plane reservations to California (and Florida, just in case). But this time, there is no doubt the Wolverines have the kind of defense that can win games all by itself. Two touchdowns allowed all season. The six points that Northwestern put on the scoreboard actually raised Michigan's points per game average from 5.

'M' volleyball looking for 'Magic' combo

Michigan volleyball coach Greg Giovanazzi has been searching for the "Magic Two." Saturday, he found them, as Karen Chase and Jane Stevens helped Michigan beat No. 25 Illinois at Huff Hall for the first time since 1983, 15-12, 15-12, 15-13. But on Friday, he didn't, and No. 10 Wisconsin swept the Wolverines, 15-12, 15-7, 15-10.

Success marked eight-year run

The new Michigan men's basketball coach stood before the press like a shy child on March 15, 1989. "For the benefit of those of you who don't know me," the former assistant began, "I'm Steve Fisher, and I am the head coach at the University of Michigan."

Fans have mixed reactions to Fisher's ring

For months, rumors that Michigan men's basketball coach Steve Fisher would be fired have spread across campus. But students and staff still appeared shocked when official word came through Saturday. The news traveled through the University quickly, and strong opinions grew fast on both sides of the issue.

Goss makes right decision by taking swift action

Most everyone has heard how Bo Schembechler appointed Steve Fisher Michigan men's basketball coach. Schembechler wanted "a Michigan man" in 1989, and Fisher was his choice.

Tuman rejoins passing attack after 3-week wait; turf slippery as a wet rock

After a three-week absence from the focus of Michigan's passing attack, tight end Jerame Tuman ate up Northwestern's pass coverage, catching five balls for 79 yards and both of Michigan's touchdowns. In Michigan's season-opener against Colorado, Tuman snared five passes for 126 yards, giving hints that the 250-pound junior would be quarterback Brian Griese's prefered target.

Offense cashes in on 3rd down

Brian Griese calls it the "money down." Lloyd Carr has stressed its importance after every game. It's third-down conversions, and Michigan toyed with Northwestern all game Saturday, moving the ball hesitantly on the first two downs and then breaking the Wildcats' backs on third down just when they seem pinned.

LSU stuns Florida; Volunteers take Dogs for a walk

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Florida's reign as the nation's top-ranked team expired at Death Valley. Cedric Donaldson returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown and Herb Tyler scored on an 11-yard run during a 93-second span in the fourth quarter as No. 14 LSU shocked the Gators 28-21 Saturday night.

Men's harriers trounce field at Keatinge

Take one look at the Michigan men's cross country team's results this fall, and boredom might set in. That's what happens when the third-ranked Wolverines turn in the same performance week in and week out. By winning the Keatinge Invitational in Orono, Maine, on Saturday, Michigan extended its winning streak to four invitationals.

Stickers get stuck with third straight conference defeat

The No. 16 Michigan field hockey team has made a habit of scoring early in games and protecting a lead for much of the game. That strategy has failed Michigan during its three-game losing streak. This weekend, the Wolverines (2-3 Big Ten, 10-5 overall) failed to score in the first half in losses to Ohio State on Friday and Penn State on Sunday. Michigan scored only two goals in the two games, falling to the Buckeyes in overtime, 2-1, and to the Nittany Lions, 4-1.

Herr goes down with 'scary' pain

MINNEAPOLIS - The Michigan hockey team's win over Minnesota was also tempered by a loss, though the full impact of the loss is yet to be known. On a team already loaded with freshmen and inexperience, the last thing the Wolverines needed was an injury to one of their top upperclassmen - much less their captain.

'M' soccer cruises in two blowouts

Attack of the Killer B's. If the Michigan soccer team's impressive victories this weekend were to be made into a cheesy horror movie, that would likely be the title.

Belkin keeps the goal in mind, long-term

Coaches put a lot of responsibility in the hands of their goalkeepers. Soccer matches are usually low-scoring affairs, so the keeper controls the fate of victory every time the opposing team mounts drive. But on the Michigan women's soccer team, that pressure has fallen in the hands of two different players. Though the season is nearly two-thirds over, neither player has won the important keeper's job.

Men's golf gets ready for trip to Kroger

Despite expectations initially soured by inexperience and youth, there is suddenly reason for optimism on the Michigan men's golf team. Fresh off a strong fifth-place finish at the 17-team Northern Intercollegiate in East Lansing, the team resumes its fall schedule at the 1997 Kroger Intercollegiate Invitational, held today and tomorrow at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn. A sprawling par 72, 7,300-yard golf course, the Colonial is host to an 18-team field split between nine northern schools and nine southern schools that will compete for both regional and overall honors.
