It could have been a lot worse. When Michigan volleyball player Karen Chase felt numbness in the outside of her leg just more than a month ago, she didn't know what was wrong.

Everyone thinking about the big game

Any football fan in the state of Michigan who says he is not thinking about a certain game scheduled for Oct. 25 in East Lansing is a blatant liar. When Michigan and Michigan State get together at Spartan Stadium in two weeks, it could be the first time that the two have faced each other as undefeateds since 1961. Both were 2-0 going into the game in East Lansing. Michigan State won, 28-0.

Comfortable in new role, Poulin still an offensive spark

Ruth Poulin has been a part of the Michigan soccer team since Day One - literally. With the program in its fourth year, the Wolverines are about to bid farewell to their seniors - members of the team's first recruiting class ever.

Blue tennis misses final rounds at grand-slam

This weekend, the Michigan men's tennis team was ready for a shootout in Austin, Texas, but the Wolverines should have brought raincoats instead of rackets. Michigan sent three seniors - Arvid Swan, Brook Blain and David Paradzik - to compete in the ITA All-American Championships, the second of four collegiate grand-slam tournaments.

Wolverines win state bragging rights, again

After winning 10 of the past 11 Michigan Intercollegiate meets, the Michigan's women's cross country team once again captured bragging rights as the best team in the state. Friday afternoon, the Wolverines captured their 11th title in 12 attempts. Michigan won the meet with an impressive 19 points, 62 points ahead of second-place Eastern Michigan and 112 points ahead of third place Western Michigan.

Men's golf team 5th in line at Kroger: Sophomore Harris takes 1st with 2-under

Coming into the season, the Michigan men's golf team returned only one starter and hoped to use the fall season to test some of its youngsters in tournament play. But, the young Wolverines responded well early with a ninth-place finish at the competitive ReliaStar Collegiate Invitational and a fifth-place showing in the Northern Intercollegiate.

Cooper stays with Jackson at QB

COLUMBUS (AP) - Despite passing for 378 yards against the nation's top-ranked team, Joe Germaine will continue to be Ohio State's long relief quarterback. Buckeyes coach John Cooper said yesterday he doesn't see any compelling reason to move Stanley Jackson out of the starting spot after Saturday's 31-27 loss at Penn State.

Lobos looking for WAC title

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - With every victory in a season that seems destined to be the best in New Mexico's history, the expectations soar higher and coach Dennis Franchione's voice of reason grows louder. New Mexico's 6-0 start is the best in school history and, with the Lobos on the verge of cracking the Top 25 for only the third time ever, Lobos fans are engulfed in talk of a bowl bid and a Western Athletic Conference title.

Fry promises to pull out all stops

IOWA CITY (AP) - Hayden Fry said yesterday he will pull out all the stops this weekend when No. 15 Iowa visits No. 5 Michigan, but the Hawkeyes' coach says it will be a ''fun'' game and not a must-win contest. "We're going to have fun. I pulled out my foot locker during the open week. I've dusted off a lot of my old exotics (trick plays) and so forth," Fry said at his weekly news conference.

Robinson to leave Trojans at end of season?

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Coach John Robinson, calling Southern California a football team in crisis, said yesterday he will quit after the season if the Trojans don't improve. "I'm a really good football coach who's not doing very well right now," Robinson said yesterday. "If I don't do better, then I will step aside.

Marlins get 1st Series bid

ATLANTA (AP) - Mission accomplished. The Florida Marlins, who spent nearly $100 million last winter with the expressed goal of shucking their label as expansion losers and buying a team to beat the Atlanta Braves, earned their way into the World Series last night.
