Turnover turnaround: Sloppy play gives way to comeback

As linebacker Sam Sword squeezed the football to his chest with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter Saturday, three hours of mayhem came to an appropriate end. Sword's interception iced No. 5 Michigan's 28-24 victory over No. 15 Iowa on a day the Wolverines' defense saved them from themselves before 106,505 at Michigan Stadium.

Ugly victory counts just as much

Poetry it was not, but championship teams need to have a few ugly performances every once in a while to keep them in sight of their goal. Each of Michigan's six victories thus far has proven something about this team that was in doubt leading up to the game. Sometimes it's pretty, sometimes it's ... uh, well, you know. Sometimes the lesson learned is of great consequence, sometimes it's one of the little things that you can't describe any other way than just that.

Dynamic duo rolls on at Wolverine: Men, women have home-course edge

John Mortimer and Kevin Sullivan are having a lot of fun with cross country this year, and yesterday's Michigan Interregional at the Michigan Golf Course was no exception. The duo hammed it up, "raising the roof" as they approached the finish line well ahead of the nearest competition.

Colgate brushes off Blue, can't do it twice

The Michigan hockey team will have to start over again. The Wolverines came into this weekend's action against Colgate riding a 36-game home unbeaten streak, but they lost to Colgate, 2-1, on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena.

Cleveland gets even with a 6-1 victory

MIAMI (AP) - The Cleveland Indians weren't about to panic. Outplayed in the opener, they came back and simply overwhelmed the Florida Marlins with their pitching, hitting and defense for a 6-1 victory last night that evened the World Series at one game each.

Ward: Former 'M' icer reects on life as a Cup champion

As a star student-athlete at Michigan, Aaron Ward frequently brought his teammates with him to help different charitable programs. One of the most rewarding experiences for Ward was visiting sick children at Mott's Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. Now a member of the Detroit Red Wings, Ward again visited Mott's this past summer. This time he brought with him the Stanley Cup - the most coveted award for all hockey fans, and the award that now has his name on it.

Star's report on NCAA is right on the 'money'

Earlier this month, the Kansas City Star ran a six-part series exposing the bureaucracy that is the NCAA. The series was impressively and extensively researched. It was such a magnificent compilation of investigative journalism that the Pulitzer Prize will probably be in the Star's future.

Soccer sweeps young conference foes

Despite bone-chilling temperatures during Friday afternoon's game, the Michigan women's soccer team was on fire. The inferno burned through the weekend and the Wolverines engulfed Illinois on Friday and Iowa on Sunday. Michigan (6-1-1 Big Ten, 13-2-1 overall) shutout the Hawkeyes, 4-0, behind two goals from senior forward Ruth Poulin. Her second-half goals boosted the Wolverines to their school-record sixth conference victory, as junior goaltender Jessica Jones recorded her third complete shutout.

Same old song: Defense earns Blue another win

Michigan linebacker Sam Sword shuffled forward and stepped in front of Iowa receiver Tim Dwight. Pressured quarterback Matt Sherman had already launched the ball into the air when Sword raced in and picked off the pass. He fell to his knees, cradling the ball like a baby, and spelled the end of the game.

Spartans become upset victim; Penn State survives

EVANSTON (AP) - Adrian Autry burned the nation's fourth-ranked rushing defense for 175 yards and Northwestern blocked a 28-yard field goal with 5 seconds left as the Wildcats dealt No. 12 Michigan State its first loss, 19-17 Saturday.

Griese shows poise, guts after terrible 1st half

Two months ago, people groaned when he was named Michigan's starting quarterback. Last week, he was a hero. Last year, after leading the Wolverines' to a 13-9 win over Ohio State, everybody loved him. In 1995, lots of people hated him.

Hawkeyes 'heartbroken' after tough loss

So what if Michigan buried the Hawkeyes statistically? So what if Michigan's defense played better than Iowa's? The Hawkeyes still felt they should have won. They capitalized on Michigan turnovers and had a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter. After blowing a 14-point lead, Iowa was devastated.

Pair of sweeps for 'M' volleyball: one for, one against

This weekend at Cliff Keen Arena, the Michigan volleyball team played the role of both underdog and favorite. On Friday, the Wolverines (6-2 Big Ten, 13-6 overall) were bullied by top-ranked Penn State, 15-5, 15-7, 15-7, but they bounced back to sweep Indiana, 15-6, 17-15, 15-10, on Saturday.

Power play improves as games progress

Chemistry on the power play isn't something that watching a couple of episodes of Mr. Wizard will take care of. No matter how many times it's practiced, sometimes the only thing that can get a power play unit to click is real-game experience.

If solace can be taken from a loss, Colgate purged icers' past

Enough talk about the "Magnificent Nine" - the nine Michigan seniors who graduated last year. Enough about all their accomplishments and domination. They're gone. The final vestige of that team has now been swept away. So enough, already.
