EAST LANSING - They dropped like flies, like 30-pound bricks from the top of Spartan Stadium. You almost had to feel sorry for them.
First it was Todd Schultz who tossed four interceptions and was beaten up all day. Then Bill Burke, who accounted for Michigan State's only points all game, had a shot, but he was sacked twice before even completing a pass for positive yardage. And when he threw the Spartans' fifth interception of the game, he was yanked.
'Wood' you believe it? Defense could have won this game all by itself
EAST LANSING - Charles Woodson's head was spinning so quickly it was amazing that he had time to stop and talk.
Then again, talking has never been much of a problem for the All-America cornerback, whose gift for gab competes pretty darn well with his gift for grabbing opposing quarterbacks' passes.
Woodson reminds us all how amazing he is
If what people were saying were true, Saturday night's hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State would signal a changing of the guard in the CCHA.
After dominating the CCHA for several years, the Wolverines were supposed to have their collective grip loosened on the CCHA crown.

What a weekend. In two games filled with controversy, double overtimes and last-second goals, the Michigan field hockey team managed to produce two victories to regain the lead in the Big Ten conference.
The Wolverines (14-5 overall, 6-3 Big Ten) went into the weekend knowing they were about to play the two most important games of the season. They came from behind in both, putting the team in great shape to win the first Big Ten title in its history.

CHICAGO - While many were surprised when assistant men's basketball coach Brian Ellerbe was promoted to interim head coach for the season on Friday, those who will probably be affected the most - the players - expressed satisfaction and relief.

MIAMI (AP) - The Florida Marlins have had a knack for comeback victories this season, and the latest was their greatest.
A World Series hampered by poor play and poor television ratings was redeemed Sunday night by Florida's flair for a dramatic finish.

Mother nature must have known how important yesterday's game against Michigan State was to the Michigan soccer team. And she decided to make it interesting.
Pelted with freezing rain and battling icy winds, Michigan (7-1-1 Big Ten, 15-2-1 overall) overcame a halftime tie and the inclement weather to defeat Michigan State, 3-1. In the process, they secured second place in the Big Ten and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

Two questions. That's what it came down to for Michigan Athletic Director Tom Goss. The Wolverines' new men's basketball coach had to answer two questions. If he couldn't? Out the door you go, bring in the next guy. At least that's what Goss said when he announced that assistant coach Brian Ellerbe, just hired in June, would take the head coaching job on an interim basis.

The Michigan crew team started two traditions this Sunday when it hosted Ohio State at the Michigan Classic on Belleville Lake. The first was beating Ohio State. The second? Racing in the dead of winter ... in October.
Because the Wolverines have a new home course at Belleville Lake, they hope to make a tradition out of the Wolverine Classic.

It was a busy weekend for the Michigan women's swimming team, which kicked off its regular season Saturday in East Lansing. Despite the cold morning temperatures at the IM West outdoor pool, the Wolverines turned in a hot performance, torching an experienced Michigan State team 129-74.

EAST LANSING - A dejected Sedrick Irvin was dressed in a green suit and a green print tie when he walked into the players' press room.
Numerous reporters and television cameramen backed Irvin into a corner and badgered him with the same questions over and over again about Michigan State's loss to Michigan on Saturday.

EAST LANSING - Less than a half-hour after Michigan's biggest victory this season, quarterback Brian Griese walked freely from the lockerroom at Spartan Stadium. There were a few lonely reporters there to greet him, but just a few, for the rest were focused elsewhere.

IOWA CITY (AP) - Randy Reiners ran for a touchdown and threw for two in his first start and Tim Dwight scored on a 92-yard punt return on Saturday to pace No. 18 Iowa to a 62-0 victory over Indiana.
The Hawkeyes (2-2 Big Ten, 5-2 overall) broke a two-game losing streak while keeping Indiana (0-5, 1-7) at a mere six points in four games in October. The Hoosiers, who have lost 20 of their last 21 Big Ten games, haven't scored a point in 10 quarters and have gone without a touchdown in the last 18.

EAST LANSING - Nobody saw it coming, except for those snickering on the Michigan State sideline. Only they saw Sedrick Irvin as he crept onto the field in Saturday's first quarter, camouflaged against his team's green backdrop, smiling from ear to ear, waiting patiently to score the Spartans' only points of the game.

On a day of shootouts and shutouts, the Rose Bowl managed to stay in the running for a national title game.
But just barely.

After the season's first official hockey practice, Michigan captain Matt Herr had a message for those expecting the Wolverines to pick up exactly where they left off last year.
"I'd rather lose 10 games at the beginning of the year ... and win a national championship, than go 30-0 and lose the last two games," Herr said.
Don't panic: Michigan's season is still young
Competition between players of the same team tends to be avoided as much as possible. It can cause conflict and disturbance for everyone on the team.
But what happens when there is only one spot left, and two people can easily fill the position? The competition is there and cannot be avoided.

CHICAGO - Two things were noticeably missing yesterday at the Big Ten Media Day - Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight and the Michigan basketball team's media guide.
While the lack of the Wolverines' media guide was not a surprise due to the recent firing of Michigan basketball coach Steve Fisher and Friday's hiring of Brian Ellerbe as the Wolverines' interim coach, Knight's absence raised some eyebrows.

CHICAGO - The Michigan women's basketball team has had problems earning respect - in the conference and in the nation.
But at yesterday's Big Ten media luncheon, the lack of respect the Wolverines receive wasn't the only thing on Michigan coach Sue Guevara's mind. The Big Ten conference is having problems of its own in that area.
