Under investigation: Media, 'U' await report's findings

University officials expect an investigation into numerous allegations made against the men's basketball team will draw to a close within the next few weeks. In the beginning of March, through a seven-month joint investigation with the Big Ten conference, the University discovered that the basketball program had committed two minor NCAA violations through contact with Detroit-area basketball booster Ed Martin.

'M' softball falls in national tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY - Saturday, May 24 was a day of mixed emotions for the Michigan softball team at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. In the day's first game, Kelly Holmes shut out South Carolina, 1-0, as Michigan (56-16-1) won its first World Series game in its third trip to the WCWS.

Former 'M' icers part of Wings' title

For five years the memory haunted them. For Aaron Ward and Mike Knuble, former Michigan hockey players, Joe Louis Arena held bitter memories of missed opportunity. While playing for Michigan in 1992, Ward and Knuble suffered heartbreak.

Ohio State ends 'M' baseball hopes

The Michigan baseball team was tired of seeing scarlet and gray by the end of the Big Ten playoffs in Ann Arbor on May 15-18. The Wolverines (19-11 Big Ten, 36-22 overall) lost twice to Ohio State (21-10, 42-16) that weekend, finishing in second place at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Hughes dismissed from basketball team

Despite the many travails of the Michigan basketball team this offseason, Michigan coach Steve Fisher does plan to start five players when Michigan opens its season. And now he knows which five - the only five left. Guard Brandun Hughes, who only played one season for Michigan was dismissed from the team June 13.

Track runs with mixed results


Kevin Sullivan's injury could have done many things. It could have put an end to the career of the Michigan distance runner - after all, he had already accomplished so much that sitting out his last two years of eligibility would have hardly destroyed his legacy. It also could have simply slowed him down. Injury can ruin the best athlete, detracting not only from physical prowess but from confidence in one's abilities as well. Sullivan allowed his injury to accomplish none of these things.

Students express mild anger, ambivalence: Some say allegations reflect poorly on entire University

Many students say their feelings are mixed about the allegations made against Steve Fisher and the Michigan men's basketball program. LSA senior Sidney Smith said he doesn't necessarily like the negative light cast by the basketball program over the University, which not only taints basketball players but the entire student population.

Fans declare support for Fisher

NOVI - With balloons, hot dogs and pictures of Steve Fisher in hand, more than 1,000 University alumni, celebrities and supporters crammed into the Novi Doubletree Hotel on July 21 to proclaim themselves loyal fans of the Michigan basketball coach.

Assistant warned Fisher of Martin

Former Michigan assistant basketball coach Perry Watson said he was concerned when he came to the University in 1991 because of his tense relationship with Detroit booster Ed Martin, according to documents released by the University under the Freedom of Information Act.

Men's tennis season disappoints


Every dynasty has to end eventually. The Michigan men's tennis team saw its reign over the Big Ten end abruptly in 1997. The defending Big Ten champion Wolverines jumped out to a horrific 2-9 start before a revamped mid-season lineup provided a few checks in the win column.

DETROIT - A crowd of more than one million fans filled the streets of Detroit and squeezed into Hart Plaza on June 10 to honor members of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Wings team members, traveling in Ford Mustangs, paraded down Woodward Avenue and Jefferson Avenue as the crowd, donned in red and white attire, stood in the sun, cheered for their heroes and took pleasure in the booming city.

Men's golf goes to NCAA tourney

In 15 seasons as coach of the Michigan men's golf team, Jim Carras had numerous highlights. PGA Tour professionals such as Ed Humenik have passed under Carras' tutelage, but in each season something was missing. Consider that void filled.

Top 'M' recruit nixed after rape allegations surface

The Michigan men's basketball program withdrew a scholarship offer from recruit Dionte Harvey, after learning that Harvey pled guilty to criminal charges. On March 24, Harvey admitted committing second-degree rape, The Detroit News reported in May.

Women's tennis falls in tourney

Like all wonderful dreams, the Michigan women's tennis team's season didn't last forever. Instead, its campaign ended abruptly on May 15, in the first round of the NCAA championship at Palo Alto, Calif. The Wolverines were rudely awakened by No. 1 Florida.

Bowens dismissed from football team

Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr dampened this season's prospects on June 6 when he announced the departure of David Bowens from the Michigan program. Bowens will not be returning to the University in the fall.

Taylor picked by Clippers in June draft

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Maurice Taylor's draft value was as unpredictable as his workout session with the team that eventually selected him. "The strangest thing came up when I worked out" with the Los Angeles Clippers, Taylor said. Clippers coach Bill Fitch "stopped workout after 30 minutes and I thought it was a bad sign. I have no idea why he stopped it. I guess it was a good sign because he picked me."

Softball waits for elusive 'big one'

OKLAHOMA CITY - After 20 seasons, the Michigan softball team finally won "the big one." Unfortunately, it wasn't "the biggest one." In Michigan coach Carol Hutchins' 12th season, she took the next step with her team. The Wolverines finally won a Women's College World Series game after being unsuccessful in their previous two attempts under Hutchins. Hutchins also led the team to the best season in Michigan softball history.

Crew's first year has mixed results: After a string of solid performances, team shut out of NCAAs

Last year was the first season for the Michigan women's crew team as a varsity sport. The team began their inaugural campaign in the fall with the Head of the Ohio regatta in Pittsburgh, where the Wolverines finished an impressive third.
