'M' spikers face multiple obstacles in Louisiana

The state of Louisiana is known for its alligators and spicy food. But indigestion and an untimely run-in with a hungry reptile will be the least of the Michigan volleyball team's worries this weekend, when the Wolverines travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the Tiger Invitational.

Seyferth up for BC AD job

Just days after Michigan named Tom Goss as its athletic director, there is news of yet another possible move in the athletic department. Fritz Seyferth - one of Michigan's four senior associate athletic directors - is reportedly being considered for the athletic director position at Boston College.

Islanders sign former 'M' icer Luhning to contract

For the first time in four years, Warren Luhning spent the first day of hockey practice watching his teammates skate. It wasn't a normal feeling. Fortunately for him, it didn't last long.

'M' soccer brings winning ways home for rst time this season

Home sweet home. With the promise the Michigan soccer team has shown over the last week, opposing teams aren't going to be very anxious to come to Ann Arbor. After a set of impressive road swings, the 22nd-ranked Wolverines (3-1) return to Ann Arbor for their home opener against Butler (2-1) on Friday. Followed by a match against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, the home games should be a welcome change for the young Wolverines.

Freshmen will have to step up for women's golf

When half of a team's starting roster are freshmen, it would be understandable to be a little worried going into the first tournament of the season. It seems no one told Michigan women's golf coach Kathy Teichert, because she is showing no signs of uneasiness.

Frieder leaves Arizona State amidst gambling controversy

PHOENIX (AP) - Bill Frieder, who only last week denied with characteristic vigor that he was going anywhere, resigned yesterday as Arizona State's basketball coach. A school spokesman confirmed that Frieder, 55, had resigned after eight seasons with the Sun Devils.

Men's golf opener tests youngsters

After losing three seniors and three starters from last season, a new and very green Michigan men's golf team begins its season on the green at the two-day ReliaStar Collegiate Invitational. Minnesota hosts the tournament, beginning Sunday, at the Dellwood Hills Golf Course in Dellwood, Minn.

Stickers face old foes with foreign flavor

In 1775, Paul Revere shouted the famous words, "the British are coming, the British are coming!" Perhaps this weekend, the Michigan women's field hockey team should be shouting "the Dutch are coming, the Dutch are coming!"

Irish ready for air attack

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - When Purdue quarterback Billy Dicken gets the ball this weekend, the Notre Dame defense knows exactly what he's going to do with it. It's going in the air, early and often. Forget about the traditional, Midwestern, smashmouth football. This is high-octane, 50-passes-a-game offense. Or as new Purdue coach Joe Tiller calls it, "basketball on grass." And it's nothing like the ground game No. 12 Notre Dame saw last week.

Odom signs with Rhode Island

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Lamar Odom, the heavily recruited high school basketball forward who had originally signed with UNLV, has decided to attend the University of Rhode Island, his lawyer said last night. "Absolutely, yes," Steve Stein told WPRO when asked if Odom was coming to South Kingstown. "My understanding is he was going through the enrollment process earlier today."

Big Ten teams feast on appetizing non-conference opponents before hearty conference slate is served

Ohio State versus Nebraska. Penn State versus Florida. Iowa versus Tennessee. All in one day. It's games like these that make college football great.

Men's harriers balance stars and depth

Two names are synonymous with Michigan men's cross country in 1997 - John Mortimer and Kevin Sullivan. But in team competition, scores aren't determined solely on the basis of a squad's top two finishers. Scores are based on the placing of a team's first five finishers, so as good as they are, Sullivan and Mortimer need a strong backup crew if Michigan is to succeed.

Colorado vs. 'M' turns into autumn tradition

BOULDER, Colo. (U-WIRE) - So what else is new? It's September. The leaves are changing colors, and many of college football's elite are in the middle of their patsie-playing non-conference schedules.
