It turned out that a letdown was not a worry for Michigan. After beating up Colorado last week, there was talk of a possible letdown against a lesser opponent, talk of playing down after a big win. It had happened so many times in the past, but it was not to be this weekend.
Grin and Bear it: Michigan has no problems, whips Baylor
Stop it. Please. If there is anything Michigan fans should know from experience, it's that cappuccino stands don't belong at a football stadium and that a couple of early-season victories - no matter how big or impressive - do little more than make SportsCenter fun to watch.
Can the cappuccino and hold off on the P-word
To be the best you've got to beat the best, and knocking the king off the throne is a pretty good start.
Only two years after finishing at the bottom of the Big Ten standings with a lone conference victory, the Michigan women's soccer team finds itself at the head of the pack, cruising to what could be Michigan's first-ever Big Ten championship.

Going into this weekend, Michigan women's cross country coach Mike McGuire ventured that the firm, flat fairways of the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing might help the Wolverines improve on their individual times. But he also expected them to produce a good effort in the first road meet of the season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota gave Courtney James a chance to stay in school, straighten out his personal life and, eventually, return to the basketball team.
He turned down the offer.

You hear the story everyday - a professional athlete in trouble with the law. Maybe it's marijuana in his trunk or cocaine and strippers in a hotel room. Whatever it may be, it happens far too often, and leaves an unfortunate impression on today's youth. So when an athlete comes along who doesn't get in trouble with the law and does positive work for the community and for the children look up to him, that should make the headlines - not the negative allegations that we hear about daily.

Picture, for a moment, English Prof. Ralph Williams storming into Tom Goss's office demanding that the new athletic director radically reform the disciplinary program of the athletic department.
"To grant or not to grant convicted felons scholarship at this University," the ridiculously out-of-place Williams might say, "is the question."
Here's your resolution: Treat athletes as students
Did you really think that after Brian Griese's magnificent passing game last week against Colorado that Michigan was about to abandon its running game and go to a ... gulp, pro-set style offense where the options are a pass, a pass and a long pass?

Exhibit One: Charles Woodson was named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to college football's top receiver, even though he caught only 13 passes last season.
Exhibit Two: In its preview of the Michigan-Baylor game, ESPN ran a 30-second commercial where college football analyst Lee Corso called Woodson an "All-American, two ways."

The final score doesn't show it. You can't see it in the box score, and there are no official stats to track it.
But it can make a difference between a victory and a defeat.

The most successful Michigan varsity team might not be ice hockey, football or men's basketball this year. It could very well be the Michigan softball team.
Softball already? Team preparation has been underway for weeks, and the exhibition season began this weekend at the Elk Rapids Collegiate tournament in Traverse City. Michigan played well, winning four out of five games.

Michigan field hockey player Julie Flachs is good at causing problems for opposing teams.
Flachs presented Central Michigan with the same problem that many other teams have had against Michigan. And like the other teams that have failed to keep her from scoring, the Chippewas lost to No. 12 Michigan, 5-1.

A lot of water can flow under a bridge in two years. For senior Shelly Johnson, the water flooded the bridge.
Johnson walked on to the Michigan field hockey team during the winter of her sophomore year. In just two years, the defender has worked her way into a starting position, providing vital assistance for her teammates.

The final weeks of an athletic team's season are usually exciting because team or individual records are often close to being broken. Numbers create drama - even if the team isn't contending for a championship.
There's lots of drama around the Michigan Soccer Field these days. The Michigan women's soccer team is contending for its first-ever Big Ten championship, crushing opponents by margins of three and four goals in the process.

Maybe practicing for hours at hitting tennis balls isn't your idea of fun.
But for senior Arvid Swan and the rest of the Michigan men's tennis team, it's as routine as brushing their teeth - especially after a summer spent preparing for the fall season.
