Wolverines survive: Blue nearly gives away come-from-behind win

It was almost as if the Wolverines wanted the test. They started sluggish, they ended sloppy. They looked good in the middle. Beaten by the Fighting Irish through the first two quarters, Michigan had its doubts at halftime. But the Wolverines persevered, thanks to a "gut-checked" defense, after nearly giving the game away.

The Michigan field hockey team made history on Friday by beating the Iowa Hawkeyes for the first time ever. The 2-1 win was the first in 32 tries for the Wolverines. As if that weren't enough, Michigan showed there would be no letdown after the historic victory, beating Northwestern 2-1, yesterday, to up their Big Ten record to 2-0.

He stopped for an hour to promote excitement for the upcoming basketball season as well as to sign copies of his most recent book, "Holding Court: Reflections on the Game I Love.

So far, so good for men's golf team

In a solid effort that appeared to answer many of the questions facing the inexperienced Wolverines, the Michigan men's golf team finished sixth overall this weekend at the 18-team Northern Intercollegiate in East Lansing. Led by top finishers Kevin Vernick (72-72-73) and Mike Harris (73-71-74), Michigan placed second behind Minnesota among the nine Big Ten finishers and 20 strokes behind the tournament champion, Kent State.
