'M' icers begin practice with new faces in old places

For the past three seasons, Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson knew what to expect at practice. He knew he had nine players who needed little direction and guidance to succeed. But yesterday at Michigan's first official practice, when Berenson looked out on the ice, he didn't have those famed nine players. Instead, he has nine new ones who need to be broken in.

Carr still in disbelief after Michigan's near crash against Irish

Two days after the fact, Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr still seemed to be in shock over his team's ability to avoid football suicide in Saturday's victory over Notre Dame. "I don't ever remember winning a game where we turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter on the short end of the field, or any end of the field," Carr said. "That is something from our vantage point that we have to get corrected."

Harriers set to upend old nemesis Wisconsin

Michigan cross country fans all over are advised to mark Nov. 1, on their calendars. That's the day you could see John Mortimer, Kevin Sullivan and the rest of the Michigan men's cross country team hoisting the Big Ten championship trophy in the air.

'M' star joins her team atop conference

Michigan sophomore Amber Berendowsky was named Big Ten Player of the Week yesterday after breaking single-season team scoring, assist and point records this past weekend. The forward scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season Friday, in a 6-0 thrashing of Wisconsin and added a goal and two assists Sunday in Michigan's 5-3 victory over Northwestern. Berendowsky now has nine goals and nine assists for 27 points on the season.

Spartans ready 'to get right back into it' according to Saban

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State coach Nick Saban didn't try to keep his 3-0 team at peak intensity during its bye week last week. He even let himself kick back a little, taking time out to rent a couple of movies and watch them with his wife, Terry.
