Dialogue addresses race
Through protest and discussion, about 400 students took part in a town hall meeting in the Union Ballroom last night as part of the President's Initiative on Race, President Clinton's program to stimulate dialogue about racial issues across the nation.
First lady to speak at Hill Auditorium
Hillary Rodham Clinton will visit the campus at the end of the month to conclude the Year of the Humanities and Arts - the theme for the 1997-98 school year that promotes the exploration of the humanities and arts.
Clinton will speak on April 28 at Hill Auditorium to celebrate the success of YoHA and, in particular, its Arts of Citizenship Program.
Vigil focuses on violence
Nearly 100 University students and community members gathered on the Diag last night for a candlelight vigil in memory of the four girls and one female teacher who were shot and killed last month by two boys outside their middle school in Jonesboro, Ark.
Thompson guilty of campaign violation
After finding Michigan Student Assembly President Trent Thompson guilty of violating the MSA Elections Code, the assembly's Penalty Elections Board issued recommendations to improve campaign guidelines yesterday.
The board's report found Thompson guilty of campaigning within 50 feet of a polling site. The board gave Thompson's ticket one penalty point for the violation, which brings his total amount of violation points to two. Receiving five points is grounds for disqualification from the election.
Surgeon general to speak at 'U'
U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher will address about 300 School of Public Health graduates at the school's May 1 commencement ceremony.
"Dr. Satcher represents the best of public health," said Public Health Dean Noreen Clark. "He is known for his humanity and the breadth of his perspective."
City to raise parking fees to 80 cents per hour
For months the battle raged, but it has finally come to conclusion.
After more than six months of meetings and discussion, the city council finally approved legislation late Monday night to raise city parking meter rates from 60 to 80 cents per hour and increase parking ticket fines from $5 to $10 for those who pay within two weeks after the ticket is issued.
Faculty salaries rising
WASHINGTON (AP) - College faculty salaries rose 3.4 percent this year, with full professors at research universities now making just under $80,000, a study released yesterday showed.
With inflation running at just half that rate, it was the largest increase in faculty pay in a decade, said the American Association of University Professors.
Town meeting addresses faculty diversity, student regent issues
University President Lee Bollinger and Provost Nancy Cantor held the second of two town meetings yesterday afternoon, where students asked about issues including minority student and faculty recruitment and the creation of a student regent.
Nagrant, Savic pass gavel to newly elected MSA leaders
Mike Nagrant added the word "former" to his title of Michigan Student Assembly president, as he passed on the gavel he has used to open MSA meetings for the past year to recently elected president Trent Thompson.
At MSA's "In-Out" meeting last night, Nagrant and MSA Vice President Olga Savic bid farewell to the old assembly and welcomed the new representatives, who will be led by Thompson and Vice President Sarah Chopp.
'U' student arrested on criminal sexual assault charge
The Department of Public Safety arrested LSA first-year student Steve Nadel on March 31 on charges of third and fourth degree criminal sexual conduct, according to DPS reports.
Third degree criminal sexual conduct is a felony, involving some form of sexual penetration. Fourth degree criminal sexual conduct, a misdemeanor, includes unwanted physical advances.

Female guards file harassment suit
Three female prison guards filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Corrections yesterday.
The women contend in a lawsuit filed in Washtenaw Circuit Court that they were the victims of a hostile work environment, offensive language and offensive conduct at the Huron Valley Men's Facility in Ypsilanti.
