Football? Check. Hockey? Check (pardon the pun). Now it's time for the No. 2 Michigan women's gymnastics team to take its shot at a national championship these next few days.
The team arrived in Los Angeles last night and had a light afternoon practice yesterday at Pauley Pavilion, which is decorated in accordance with the importance of the upcoming tournament.

Memories of the Michigan tradition and competition, combined with friendships that will last long into the future - that's what senior co-captain Heather Kabnick of the Michigan women's gymnastics team treasures most about her four years as a Wolverine.
Heather Kabnick might be Michigan's best bet for a title
Most members of the Michigan men's gymnastics team have put 1998 behind them, for better or worse, setting their sights on next year.
But four Wolverines still have unfinished business. After concluding successful individual seasons in their respective events, each will have the shot to take home a national title this weekend as they travel to Penn State for the NCAA Championships.

Sometimes, the best lessons are the toughest to take.
And the lesson Michigan's softball team learned yesterday at the hands of the Spartans was a particularly tough one.
Five errors might be one lesson for softball
Everything was going so well for the Michigan softball team. Riding a 17-game win streak after Tuesday's victory over Michigan State in the first game of a doubleheader, the No. 2 Wolverines (35-4 overall, 12-1 Big Ten) looked unstoppable. They had swept both of their conference series against Ohio State and Minnesota, and hadn't lost a Big Ten game since April 13, 1997.

Crunch time has arrived for the Michigan men's tennis team.
The Wolverines (6-0 Big Ten, 11-3 overall) will play three matches in the next four days, including two against top teams in the region. The crucial weekend starts today against the No. 3 team in their region, Notre Dame (14-6), at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Now this is what the Michigan women's tennis team needs. A guaranteed 'W.' A match where the Wolverines can relax and cruise to victory.
Or can they? With the parity that exists in the Big Ten this year, it seems that the old cliché is ringing true: Any team can beat any other on any given day.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech has slashed athletic scholarships and promised to forfeit perhaps dozens of victories because of rules violations for the last six years. It's up to the NCAA to decide if the self-imposed punishment fits the crime.

The Michigan women's golf team made another unexpected change in its schedule last week with the postponement of the Iowa Invitational. The Wolverines competed in the Tri-State invitational on Easter Sunday and canceled the postponed tournament in Iowa.

Inconsistency and a lack of depth still continue to plague the Michigan men's golf team in the midst of a frustrating season. But, during a spring of disappointment, the recent individual play of Mike Harris and Keith Hinton has provided a hint of much-needed optimism heading into the final few weeks of the season.

For the second time in three weeks, members of the highly touted No. 18 Michigan men's track and field distance squad will follow the setting sun west to California. A select group of Wolverines, led by All-American Kevin Sullivan, will compete in the Mt.

Ask any college basketball or football fan to give you the top five teams in the sport and the fan will usually be able to produce a reasonably accurate answer.
But it's a little more difficult to tell exactly who are the best squads in lesser-known sports - such as track and field. Although the Associated Press doesn't rank the nation's best track teams, and CNN/USA Today doesn't sponsor a coaches' poll as they do for football and basketball, the sport does have one outlet which compiles mid-season rankings - Trackwire.
EAST LANSING (AP) - Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is going to reap some rewards for the Spartans' strong season - a fatter bankroll.
Izzo and school officials confirmed Tuesday an agreement that should boost his income to roughly $600,000 a year, up from $440,000, the Lansing State Journal reported in a story published yesterday.
