Michigan State's Izzo isn't hurting for cash

EAST LANSING (AP) - Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is going to reap some rewards for the Spartans' strong season - a fatter bankroll.

Izzo and school officials confirmed Tuesday an agreement that should boost his income to roughly $600,000 a year, up from $440,000, the Lansing State Journal reported in a story published yesterday.

''It isn't signed yet. But I think it's great,'' Izzo told the State Journal. ''If it's possible to have a deal that's good for all parties, that's what this is.''

Izzo's base salary is slated to climb from $130,000 to $175,000, with a $35,000 annuity added, the State Journal reported. Additional compensation, including summer camps, television and radio shows, and shoe and equipment contracts should increase from $300,000 to $390,000.

''When all is said and done ... we're getting a million-dollar coach for 600,000 bucks,'' Michigan State vice president and spokesperson Terry Denbow said.

The Spartans, originally predicted to finish low in the Big Ten, were co-champions with a 13-3 conference record and a 22-8 overall record.
