AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Univesity of Texas System officials said they hope an appeal of the settlement ruling in the Hopwood v. the University of Texas School of Law case will lead to a reevaluation of affirmative action policies in Texas higher education.
Residence hall dues to hit $22
The Residence Hall Association passed a proposal last night to raise the student Housing fee $2, resulting in a total house due of $22 per student living in the residence halls.
In the past, RHA received 60 cents per student each semester from University Housing, taken from the fee for a student's room and board, and the house councils of the residence halls received the $20 student fee charged to the student's account.
Rose honored for Rhodes Scholarship
Many students have been recognized for academic achievement, community involvement and student leadership. For most, recognition means a certificate, an award or a pat on the back.
But for LSA senior Fiona Rose, former Michigan Student Assembly president, it meant a day in Lansing in front of the State Legislature. And it means an education at Oxford University.
A piece of stadium history: Scoreboards prepared for ceremonial dismantling
The scoreboards that have loomed over the spectators at Michigan Stadium for more than 30 years will soon become tiny pieces hanging over University community members living room couches.
Last month, the University Board of Regents approved a $7.9 million project to replace both the stadium scoreboards and all four dot-matrix scoreboards in Crisler Arena with combination video score boards. The project also includes the construction of a production facility in Crisler.

Although a site has not yet been chosen, organizers said their rally will run concurrently with the Klan's demonstration.
Residency guide to be clarified for spring semester
Many University students may think that living in Ann Arbor for a full year or getting a Michigan driver's license is grounds to claim Michigan residency.
But University officials said proving Michigan residency isn't that easy, and they are currently updating the decades-old Residency Classification Guidelines. The changes, which were approved by the University Board of Regents nearly one year ago, will go into effect this spring semester.

LANSING (AP) - Flamboyant attorney Geoffrey Fieger formally entered the governor's race yesterday, but said he won't quit defending assisted suicide practitioner Jack Kevorkian during the campaign.
He also said his first act as a Democratic governor would be to do away with an assisted suicide ban if the Legislature passes one this year. And he didn't stop there.
Advice Online gaining popularity on campus
Many students get advice from their parents. Others religiously follow the words of Dear Abby and Miss Manners. But some students find advice where you'd least expect it - at a computer terminal.
Nearly a year ago, the Michigan Student Assembly launched Advice Online, a computer service that attempts to measure the degree of enjoyment - or suffering - students experienced in their courses. The Website, www.umich.edu/~msa/advice/, has received more than 16,000 hits since its inception.

LSA senior Trisha Miller, who chairs The Environmental Clearinghouse that sponsored the panel, said the event was a chance to unite leaders working for environmental justice and students interested in learning how to affect the legislative process.
Friday Focus: A year like no other
Tom Goss will be hard-pressed to avoid a bit of a sophomore slump. With less than a year under his belt as Michigan's athletic director, Goss has seen his department enjoy more success in a single school year than it has in a long, long time - maybe ever.
