LOS ANGELES - Michigan's women's gymnastics team showcased three of its finest athletes at the NCAA individual event finals held Saturday - Heather Kabnick, Sarah Cain and Nikki Peters.
Senior co-captain Kabnick reacquainted the crowd at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion with the Wolverines after the team's surprising absence from Friday's Super 6 championship finals.
Flips and trips: Individual performances ease team loss
One All-America honor was not enough for LaLo Haro.
It has been 28 years since Michigan has had an All-American in the all-around. Last Thursday, Haro broke that skid, placing fourth at the NCAA Championships at Penn State.

LOS ANGELES - There were blinking lights, silver streamers and famous celebrities at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion this weekend for the NCAA women's gymnastics Championships.
The theme was "The Stars Come Out" in L.A. It's just too bad none of those stars were from Michigan.

Yesterday was a big day at Alumni Field. The Michigan softball team opened its new lockerroom facility to its fans and honored the building's benefactor, Donald Shepherd. The pep band even made its initial appearance at Alumni Field this season.

Saturday's spring football game had the feel of an early season Michigan football contest - actual referees, hard-hitting, sizable crowd, the band, a pleasantly sunny day and even a close game.
The only things missing? One - an opponent, two - a scoreboard; and three - law enforcement officials with mace and billy clubs to prevent fans from rushing onto the field after the game.

LOS ANGELES - A perfect ending for a perfect season - for Georgia, not Michigan.
Georgia junior Karin Lichey vaulted her top-ranked Gym dogs to their 17th victory in a row and the NCAA women's gymnastics title with a perfect 10 on Friday night at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.

You can tell a great sportswriter from the rest by the writer's ability to make the personalities of the athletes, whose talents we so admire, come to life on the printed page. The great ones can spot an athlete's quirks, nuances or superstitions from the press box, and if they can't locate them, the writer is smart enough to dig deep and find it. A great sportswriter is about as rare as a great athlete.
Championships, famous quotes mark Daily career
Four years ago this Sept. 24, I walked toward Michigan Stadium for just the second time ever, having no idea what the future of that autumn afternoon would hold. In hindsight, it is a day neither I, nor anyone else involved, will ever forget.
From doubter to believer - it's been one hell of a ride for a true Wolverine
Almost everyone calls her Skeeter, but after this weekend, opposing pitchers might have other names they'd like to call her.
Michigan catcher Melissa Gentile (that's the name on her drivers' license, anyway) has been hitting the softball with dead-eye accuracy, and if she hadn't made a name for herself yet, she has now.
Whatever her name, she still torches 'Cats for 7 RBI
She found herself in the unlikeliest of positions. Second base. And she stood there shaking after getting her first RBI ever.
And as she stood there, she could only think, "Oh my God."

Sophomore sensation Melissa Gentile can't seem to keep the ball in the park - her season and career home run totals are both Michigan records.
Gentile collected her eighth and ninth home runs of the season this weekend, totaling 15 for her career. Her fourth-inning tater in the second game of the doubleheader against Northwestern was especially rewarding, as it proved to be the game-winner in the 1-0 contest.
New facilities broken in; Conrad's streak ends at 18
Michigan State left fielder Tom Hartley closed his glove around Michigan second baseman Bobby Scales' long drive, and leapt into the air - dashing the Michigan baseball team's hopes for a fantastic comeback.
But Hartley was really just finishing a job he had started a half-inning before.
'M' drops thrilling series finale, loses three of four to Spartans
It may be that Michigan pitcher Brian Steinbach just doesn't like Michigan State. As a senior, it is likely that he's been around Ann Arbor long enough to develop a healthy dislike for the green and white.
Look at the numbers. Steinbach is 4-0 against the Spartans in his career, with a stingy 1.88 ERA. He beat them again this weekend, posting a complete game shutout in Michigan's 6-0 win in the latter half of Saturday's doubleheader.
Steinbach feels clock ticking, shuts down conference rivals
This past weekend could not have been more important for the Michigan pitching staff. The Wolverines, who have been cloaked in inconsistency this season, were facing rival Michigan State for a four-game series.
Michigan's pitchers put together a dismal ERA of 7.15 and lost three of four to Michigan State over the weekend.
'M' pitching corps falters in losses
NEW YORK (AP) - Peyton Manning is finally No. 1.
Randy Moss, however, fell all the way to No. 21, before the Vikings decided his talent was worth the risk.
Raiders pick off Woodson; four other Wolverines are taken
Winning the Big Ten championship has two effects on the Michigan women's track team's reputation.
The title earned the Wolverines instant respect around the conference, lofting expectations to the level of perennial superpowers Illinois and Wisconsin.
Countdown to championship begins for 'M'
All puns aside, the men's track and field team was difficult to keep track of this weekend. With some members of the team heading off to California for the second time in three weeks and the rest of the Wolverines participating in the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing, head coach Jack Harvey would have to be excused if he didn't know exactly where all his athletes were.
Track scattered for the weekend
It happened again.
All season long the Wolverines have followed a certain path when they play - they destroy weaker teams and barely lose to stronger ones.
Weekend split drops Blue to 2nd place
This is beginning to get ugly. Two weeks ago, against some good competition, the Michigan women's tennis team lost the doubles point in both of its Big Ten matches. The Wolverines could muster only one victory in six doubles matches. Two of their losses were close 9-7 defeats.
