The former NBA star is accused of using an iron to burn his girlfriend, Lisha Spacek, in a fight over money. Spacek died in a December traffic accident.
Sgt. Darrell Watson said court records indicated a warrant was being prepared for Tarpley, whose whereabouts were not known.
Tarpley was barred from the NBA in 1991 for using cocaine. The league reinstated him before the start of the 1994-95 season.
In the fall of 1995, Tarpley couldn't complete a team physical because of suspected pancreatitis. He was banned again in December of 1995 for using alcohol, which violated terms of his aftercare program.
Tarpley's attorney, Carl Hays, told KDFW-TV that he has not spoken with his client in three weeks. Hays said he has been trying to locate Tarpley for the past week.
