Gymnasts ring up academic accolades

This year, the Michigan men's gymnastics team had its eyes set on a much larger picture then just the pommel horse, rings and floor exercises. The Wolverines strived for and achieved academic excellence as well. Along with placing sixth in the Big Ten and fifth at the NCAA East Regional, the Wolverines finished seventh in the National Academic Top 20 gymnastics team listing, maintaining a team grade point average of 3.130 during the 1998 season.

Michigan goes One-on-One with country

While speaking at an alumni club function in Chicago earlier this summer, athletic director Tom Goss, still every inch the businessman, conducted a little impromptu focus-group research. He asked the assembled alums to raise their hand if they'd like to hear Michigan football games on the radio.

Volleyball ranked 7th

Ten Big Ten coaches picked the Michigan volleyball team, coming off its most successful season in program history to finish seventh in the conference in the 1998 season. After finishing third in the conference a year ago and making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the low ranking is likely because Michigan lost its two best players to graduation. NCAA votes on scholarships, championships

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) - A proposal to reduce the limit on football scholarships at Division I schools was rejected by the NCAA Division I Management Council. The council, meeting this week in Philadelphia, did not support any changes in the football limits for either Division I-A or I-AA, the NCAA announced Wednesday.

Henson hits 1st HR

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Two-sport star Drew Henson hit his first pro home run Saturday, connecting for the New York Yankees' rookie team in the Gulf Coast League. Henson, Michigan's highly touted incoming freshman quarterback, was picked in the third round of the June draft by the Yankees.

Shields, Turco do it for old time's sake

When the Blue and White teams took the ice for the under-35 Michigan Hockey Old Timers game Friday, it was just a fun exhibition game - the score did not matter. Featuring recent Michigan hockey graduates from David Oliver to Brendan Morrison, with 2,000 fans on hand to watch - about 1,985 more than last year - the players were just there to have a good time.
