Sound actions: City evaluates emergency warning system
Blaring sirens during a period of bad weather are a familiar sound in the summertime. In recent months, concerns have arisen over the health of Ann Arbor's emergency warning system. In response, the city has taken the proper actions and put the system under review. The city must not put off any needed repairs and improvements to the system, which is so vital to Ann Arbor residents and visitors.
Ill communication: Prop. 227 ends bilingual education in California
Thirty years after its institution, bilingual education in California has been put to an end. To many California residents, the acceptance of Proposition 227 - the article which mandates the replacement of bilingual education with monolingual methods - has come as a devastating stigma. The numerous immigrant factions of California have been traumatized in particular, and if the 1967 educational implementation remains abolished, more than 1 million students with limited English skills will be mainstreamed into general classrooms after one year of intensive English instruction.
Poor advertising: National campaign targets homosexuality
Not long ago, an advertising campaign in several major newspapers - launched by a coalition of 15 right-wing religious groups - set out to advocate the conversion of homosexuals to a heterosexual lifestyle. The campaign, called "Truth in Love," features Anne Paulk, a self-described "wife, mother, former lesbian" calling on other gays and lesbians to follow her path in accepting heterosexuality as part of the Christian faith.

When Ted Williams stepped up to bat with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning on September 28, 1960, it was a special occasion. This was the 42-year-old Splendid Splinter's final at bat. And on a 1-1 pitch from Baltimore's Jack Fisher, he hit a home run to close out the summer and his great career.
I'll always remember it in my own, inaccurate way
I guess that old saying is true after all - you don't know what you got till it's gone. It, in this case, being my career as a Daily columnist. Indeed, it is about to be gone.
