Swing craze dances its way across campus
The liveliest craze in after-hours recreational activity is dancing its way across campus, from the CCRB to the Union and beyond.
Swing dancing's appeal never dwindled for experts of the dance community, but for most people, the resurgence is relatively recent. With the release of movies such as "Swing Kids" and "Swingers," plus The Gap commercials featuring twirling khaki-clad teenagers, swing dancing is quickly becoming a trend of epic proportions.

From Jamboree to 'Jiggy Wit It': Like to dance?
Though swing dancing seems to be sweeping popular culture in Ann Arbor, alternatives to that particular dance form remain viable options for the interested booty-shaker.
A rival to swing - in number of followers and campus popularity - is classic ballroom dancing, the nostalgic aura of which reminds some of past times they never experienced themselves. Also, some of the University community have been attracted to square dancing or Latin salsas.
Ann Arbor's got a lot of options
A cappella style, sound catching on all over campus
Bubbly. Polished. Drunk. The Friars, an eight-man subset of the Men's Glee Club and one of several a cappella groups on campus, are intoxicated with making music. Based on a 50 year-old mantra of "light-hearted spontaneity" embodied by a frothy beer mug, the group's uncommon blend of melody, humor and style springs from camaraderie among members who love to sing, arrange music and have fun.
Rock hall of fame offers amazing music mix
CLEVELAND - One thing becomes quickly and abundantly clear to visitors of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: just about everything started with Chuck Berry.
On the ground floor of the six-story rock 'n' roll fantasy - a building that really can start to look like a guitar if you gawk at it long enough - there are video screens that allow those so-inclined to track the musical influences that helped shaped the country's favorite bands of today.

Amos helps to shatter rock 'n' roll stereotypes one show at a time
Tonight's appearance of Tori Amos at the Breslin Center in East Lansing represents more than just an artist making a stop to promote her latest album.
It is a striking example of a phenomenon that has taken much too long to gain the attention it deserves. It is the voice of one of many talented women whose entire genre of music has been overlooked and underappreciated for years.
Heidelberg slams draw national talent, local amateurs
In the realm of poetry, sometimes hearing a poem and reading a poem can be worlds apart. Or so visitors discover at the Heidelberg Poetry Slam.
Organized by Ann Arbor residents Steve and Deb Marsh, Dan Jacobs, and Larry Francis, the Heidelberg Poetry Slam occurs the first Tuesday of every month. This event features a diverse collection of poets who volunteer to read from their original work.
'Swingers' is always worth catching again
School is hard.
Finals. Term papers. CRISP.
So take a break from the grind and rent "Swingers," a comedy you can roll with.
"Swingers" is the story of five wannabe actors who tool around Los Angeles looking for jobs and, more importantly, beautiful
babies. Yet their drives for digits are only a small part of what makes this a must-rent for rounders and squares alike.
Hoping for a snow day to cancel classes? Don't hold your breath
Uncross your fingers. Save that snow chant. Let go of the dreams of class-less weekdays due to a snow-in and instead, save that energy to put on your golashes and bundle up.
It's been more than 20 years since the last time the University was closed due to winter weather.
If Life is Beautiful
Over Thanksgiving break, I saw the film "Life is Beautiful." Starring Roberto Benigni, the movie is about an Italian Jew, Guido, who faces the harsh possibility of death during the Nazi regime in World War II Europe. He is taken to a concentration camp with his 6-year-old son, Giosue.

Words, words, words
The problem with words, as I'm sure you'll agree, is that anyone may use them.
Please don't misread this and conclude that I'm advocating the repeal of the First Amendment. Quite the contrary. I'm a firm and vocal believer in free speech. And, more important, if the aforementioned Amendment were removed from the U.S. Constitution, my column, I fear, would soon be struck from these cheap pages of newsprint.
