Ellerbe 'proud' after road romp

IOWA CITY - Iowa's full-court and half-court traps were supposed to fluster Michigan in rowdy Carver-Hawkeye Arena, a place where the Wolverines haven't won since 1994. Instead, Michigan used pressure of its own and the Hawkeyes' trap proved to be no more than a trap ... for Iowa.

Michigan keeps hope alive with Iowa win

That thump you heard coming out of Carver-Hawkeye Arena yesterday - it was the sound of the defibrillator paddles (you know, like the ones they always use on E.R.) jumpstarting the Michigan basketball team and reviving not only its Big Ten championship hopes, but its entire season.

Icers win twice - one big, one small

In the blink of an eye, the Michigan hockey team's weekend could have ended in bitter disappointment - even after a blowout road victory on Friday night. The Wolverines (16-4-1 CCHA, 22-6-1 overall) pulled out a 5-4 overtime victory at home over Notre Dame (8-10-3, 13-13-3) Saturday night, after crushing the Irish, 7-2, in South Bend on Friday.

'Reversal' for women's hoops brings 'M' loss to Indiana

As famous baseball player, coach and philosopher Yogi Berra said, it was like deja vu all over again. Yesterday, the Michigan women's basketball team (6-5 Big Ten, 14-7 overall) lost to Indiana, 67-58, in a game that was eerily similar to the Wolverines' victory in Bloomington two weeks ago. The Hoosiers (6-5, 15-9) jumped out to a 12-point halftime lead yesterday and made their free throws in the second half to hold off a late Michigan run.

Seniors go out in Richardson's 100th

A 68-6 record in Big Ten competition, 101 victories in 13 seasons and Big Ten champion swimmers in a variety of events are some of the illustrious credentials of Michigan women's swimming coach Jim Richardson. On Friday, Richardson passed the century mark in victories when his team beat a greatly improved Indiana team, 136-102, in the first of two back-to-back dual meets.

Memo to Goss: Ellerbe is the man for the position

Brian Ellerbe and I could relate to one another. Not that we have had the chance to do so or anything, but we're in similar situations that few can envy: As of right now, neither one of us knows what we will be doing next fall.

Rose: Former Fab Fiver speaks his mind about time at 'M'

When Jalen Rose arrived at Michigan as a freshman in 1991, everyone on campus already knew him - he was one of the Fab Five. For the next two seasons, along with classmates Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, they 'shocked the Audio world' with their long shorts and alley-oops.

Johns vs. Barnes? Not if you ask Pollyanna

There she was, Pollyanna Johns, the big, 6-foot-3 center of the Michigan women's basketball team, lying on the floor after Quacy Barnes, the big, 6-5 center for Indiana, muscled a rebound out of her hands. The frustration on her face told the story of the game.

Arman hammers Notre Dame in debut

Krikor Arman was an unlikely hero for the Michigan hockey team Friday, scoring two goals - including the game winner - in his first game as a Wolverine. With Michigan trailing 1-0 midway through the first period and being outplayed by Notre Dame, the sophomore walk-on gave the Wolverines a lift, as he fired a backhand shot by Notre Dame goaltender Forrest Karr to tie the game 1-1.

Michigan State crushes Miami (Ohio), 7-0

EAST LANSING (AP) - Chad Alban made 21 saves and Shawn Horcoff had two goals and an assist as Michigan State (14-4-3 CCHA, 22-3-4 overall) shut out Miami (Ohio) (12-6-3, 17-6-3) 7-0 on Saturday. The shutout was the 11th of Alban's career, a school record, and his fifth this season.

Irish luck runs out in third period

The third period was painful to watch. It really was. Michigan giving up four goals in that frame on Saturday was one of the more troubling sights of the season.

Conlan breaks back into starting lineup

IOWA CITY - For the first time this season, the two Michigan co-captains - Robert Traylor and Travis Conlan - together approached the mid-court circle for the opening jump ball. Traylor has been there all year, starting all 21 games of the season. But Conlan, who broke his wrist this past November after diving for a loose ball, has started the games standing - with his teammates, in front of the Michigan bench - instead hanging back behind Michigan's Maceo Baston, waiting for the tip to head his way.

At last, Michigan gets one for the road victory away from Crisler

IOWA CITY - Finally, the Michigan basketball team won a big game - on the road. After falling to Indiana on Jan. 6 and then falling apart against Illinois last weekend, it looked like the Wolverines might never win an important road game, continuing an historic trend that puts the Wolverines' overall road record at 492-516.

First dual meet no problem for Blue

The question marks about the Michigan men's tennis team were erased yesterday at the Varsity Tennis Center as Michigan trounced Virginia, 4-3, in its first dual match of the season. A subpar performance two weekends ago at the Big Ten Singles championships clouded the possibility of Michigan's chances to reign as a nationally ranked team this season.

'M' women's tennis dominates in duals

Domination. Pure and simple. There's no way around it. The Michigan women's tennis team absolutely dominated the competition this weekend. It began with a 9-0 sweep of Western Michigan on Friday night and was followed by a 7-2 victory over Marquette on Saturday.

Men's track finishes third in state meet

The Michigan men's track and field team traveled to Michigan State for the Michigan Intercollegiate in hope of capturing state bragging rights, but left with disappointed with its third-place finish. Eastern Michigan won Saturday with 167 points, followed by Western Michigan with 109 points and Michigan with 104. The annual race consisted solely of Michigan universities, so state bragging rights were at stake.

Women crush local competition at state Intercollegiate meet

At last, the Michigan women's track team can call itself state champion. The Wolverines dominated five in-state teams to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Saturday, crushing the field with 226 points. Eastern Michigan was runner-up, but still failed to eclipse the century mark, with 95 points. Big Ten rival Michigan State, the only conference foe at the Intercollegiate, managed just 54 points for fourth place.

Illini, Lions humble men's gymnastics

In what was supposed to be a fight to the finish, the Michigan men's gymnastics team traveled to Champaign this weekend for a clash with Big Ten rivals Illinois and Penn State. Michigan (0-4 Big Ten, 0-4 overall) entered Saturday's meet tied with Illinois at No. 7 in the national polls, but in the end, neither the Wolverines nor the Nittany Lions could overcome an inspired performance by the Fighting Illini.

'M' women's gymnasts win bragging rights

The ninth-ranked Michigan women's gymnastics team legitimized its national ranking with a victory that earned them the right to call itself the state's best at the Michigan Classic in East Lansing on Saturday. The competition showcased the talent of four of Michigan's finest women's gymnastics programs, or more to the point, three of the nation's most skillful teams.

Unbeaten Utah and Kentucky fall; Duke rolls

McLeod's point total was two off his career high, set earlier this season at Florida State, while Trajan Langdon added 17 as Duke moved to 74-8 under Mike Krzyzewski when ranked No. 1. The Yellow Jackets were led by Dion Glover's 20 points and Matt Harpring's 19.

Men's swimming downs Indiana

Saturday was a homecoming reunion of sorts for the Michigan men's swimming team. The Wolverines were home for the first time this season and together as a team for the first time in almost three months.
