Bombs away!: Gophers detonate 14 from long range

MINNEAPOLIS - When 6-foot-11 freshman center Kyle Sanden - whose role is primarily to get down and dirty with the big boys in the paint - drained his second 3-pointer of the year in only his third attempt of the season, it was clear Michigan was in for a long day.

Michigan better seen at Mall

MALL OF AMERICA, Minn. - First of all, Boss, I want you to sit down. Have a glass of water. Relax. I know you sent me to Minnesota to cover the Michigan basketball game. So that's exactly what I did. Tipoff to tipoff. Didn't miss a second. I just, uh, well, I never made it to Williams Arena.

You see, I've been inside the Mall of America since Friday afternoon.

Icers explode to victory with 4 goals in the third

The Michigan hockey team only played one game this weekend, but Saturday's 4-1 victory against Lake Superior State (9-10-4 CCHA, 12-12-4 overall) seemed like it could have been two different games. After being shut out in the first two periods, No. 6 Michigan (17-4-1, 23-6-1) looked like a different team in the third, scoring four goals on 17 shots.

Bobby 'Maize' Hayes

Bobby Hayes didn't come to Michigan with much confidence. In fact, when Hayes originally committed to play hockey for the Wolverines, he wasn't supposed to come to Michigan with much of anything - including a scholarship. So as he prepared to leave for Ann Arbor, Hayes wasn't worried about how much playing time he'd get, how many goals he'd score or how many assists he'd dish out. No, Hayes had much more basic concerns on his mind.

'M' hoops edge out Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE - After losing two of its last three games, the Michigan women's basketball team needed a victory in a big way. Scratch that - the Wolverines needed a victory as if their NCAA tournament bid depended on it. Yesterday, Michigan got that desperately-needed win as it knocked off Purdue in a nailbiter, 62-60, at Mackey Arena. Purdue guard Ukari Figgs' last-second, desperation shot bounced harmlessly off the backboard, and the win was secured.

Finnish cross-country skier captures gold

NAGANO, Japan (AP) - Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Japan's arctic conditions continued for a second day, forcing postponement of the women's snowboard giant slalom and the first run of the men's combined slalom.

Street to ski for U.S. in women's super-G

HAKUBA, Japan (AP) - Skiers call it a wipeout, that frightening moment when they lose control coming down the hill and go flying off into space, arms and legs flailing helplessly. It is an instant frozen in time, one when the danger of their sport is very real. And for American Picabo Street, it was a moment that nearly wrecked her comeback.

Women's track runs to victory at Meyo

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan women's track team entered Saturday's Meyo Invitational undefeated in three competitions. The Wolverines left Notre Dame still unscathed.

Sprinters, Michigan men's track outdistance opponents in individual-only Meyo Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind.- Notre Dame hosted the Meyo Invitational this past Saturday, but it was Kevin Sullivan and the Michigan men's track team that stole the show. For the past few weeks, the sprint squad had been lagging in production, compared to the country's premier distance team. On Saturday, Sullivan once again shocked the track world and the sprint team recorded numerous personal bests.

Top recruiting class doesn't neccessarily equal Roses

It has been just more than a month since Michigan ended its five-year Rose Bowl draught and already people are talking about going back. It took the Wolverines 49 years to win their second national championship, and it could be 49 more until they do it again - but don't tell that to the folks in State Street Barber Shop.

Third-period collapse kills Lakers again

DETROIT - 'It's all your fault, it's all your fault!' The harsh mantra Michigan hockey fans pelt at opposing goalies is often too harsh - of course, that's the point. But for once, on Saturday night, it was a bit more appropriate.

RedHawks, Spartans battle to scoreless tie

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Miami of Ohio goalie Trevor Prior had 28 saves, including three in overtime play, and Michigan State's Chad Alban stopped 20 shots as the RedHawks and Spartans skated to a 0-0 draw Saturday night. Prior stopped 10 shots during the first period, seven in the second and eight in the third for the RedHawks (12-6-4 CCHA, 18-6-4).

Missed free throws stall Michigan's comeback

MINNEAPOLIS - The story of Saturday's 88-78 Minnesota victory at Williams Arena, no doubt, was Minnesota's game-long 3-point barrage, which left the Wolverines gaping and put the Gophers in firm command. Entering the game, Minnesota was ranked ninth in the Big Ten in 3-point shooting percentage, but the Gophers made 14 of their 20 trey attempts on the afternoon, 13 of which came on the team's first 16 attempts. As Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe said, "If 3-8 teams in the conference go 14-for-20 from 3-point range, it's gonna be tough to win any games.

Blue contains White, Figgs

WEST LAFAYETTE - It does not take a great coaching mind to figure out how to stop the Purdue women's basketball team. One glance at any Boilermaker box score and it becomes obvious - contain Stephanie White and Ukari Figgs. Noticing this is the easy part. Actually doing it is something completely different. Just ask one of the many Big Ten teams the backcourt duo has burned.

'M' wrestlers split weekend matches

You win some, you lose some. The No. 13 Michigan wrestling team learned this lesson firsthand over the weekend as the Wolverines whipped rival Ohio State, 31-3, on Friday, but fell to No. 11 Purdue, 18-15, on Saturday night.

Wolverines begin long climb: Logan's five-match winning streak sparks resurgence for Blue

Making a comeback is never easy, but the Michigan wrestling team is doing its best. The Wolverines began the season ranked fourth in the nation, but the trauma caused by the December death of teammate Jeffrey Reese in December - combined with injuries to starters Bill Lacure and Teya Hill - led to some unexpected defeats and a drop in the rankings.

Swimmers down Buckeyes, Spartans

"Derya Buyukuncu ... " The Canham Natatorium announcer boomed. And so Buyukuncu trotted between two rows of teammates, slapping palms and getting "chill bumps" as he listened to the litany of his accomplishments and those of his teammates. In their last meet at Canham, Michigan swimming and diving seniors were honored before the meet, and then they dunked Michigan State, 138-95.
