Valentine's Day brings out best and worst of passion

It's the season of love - candy, flower and jewelry shops are all bracing themselves for a mad rush of Valentine's Day shoppers. Girlfriends, boyfriends, parents and grandparents are lost in the same sea of red, cards, candy hearts and roses. It's an exciting day for all .

Funny valentines: 'U' students' relationships come in all shapes and sizes

The Beatles said it best: "All you need is love." Perhaps they were thinking of the fiery, passionate love that makes you weak in the knees, turns your stomach to pure Jell-O and transforms your thoughts to mush.

From bars to libraries, students meet mates at campus locales

Looking for love in all the wrong places? All dressed up and nowhere to go? Don't worry. There are plenty of spots on campus to meet that special someone, maybe even in time for Valentine's Day. Whether you're searching for real love, or just some scintillating conversation, you don't need to go far to get what you're looking for.

Beyond dinner and flowers: Creative Valentine's gifts abound

"Will you be my Valentine?" It's a generic question and it may sound a bit cheesy, but on Feb. 14 this Hallmark cliché is the most popular question asked. Let's face it - who doesn't want a Valentine on Valentine's Day? It's the one day of the year when Cupid's not sleeping because he's too busy shooting his arrow at people who need a bit of romance in their lives. If you are lucky enough to become lovestruck, get ready to make some sizzling moments with the one who makes you feel extra groovy.

My Valentine has a first name ...

Love is a many-splendored thing. But who needs love when you've got Oscar?

Some 'U' students brave extra miles for long-distance relationships

Valentine's Day is approaching, afflicting those non-single students with lovesick glances and puppy-dog eyes. Yet, as many broken-hearted souls have learned, Cupid can be as heartless as he is merciful, especially when it comes to the geographical locations of the hearts he marks as his target.

Mystery date

I'll admit, I was very tempted.

I've finally got a chance to write a column about Valentine's Day, unquestionably the most accursed span of 24 hours in the entire year. I've finally got a chance to spout off on a day whose only purpose is obviously to torment and torture the likes of poor, lonely slobs.

Surreal 'Corpses' come to life at Ann Arbor Art Center and Espresso Royales

Surrealism has begun to seduce Ann Arbor. An art exhibit at the Ann Arbor Art Center, films at the Michigan Theater, and lectures and games throughout the city are only a few aspects of a multi-disciplinary celebration. The 20th-Century art form also takes shape at Espresso Royale Cafes, where specially designed kits allow anyone, artistic or not, the chance to explore their own creative pools playing "Exquisite Corpse." The game was created during the birth of surrealism and is the focus of an arts extravaganza invading the heart of the city.

WB's 'Three' crowds airwaves

When you take a dashing jewel thief, a streetwise and street-tough femme fatale and a super computer hacker, you have cliché cubed. If they're working for a secret government agency in order to repay their debt to society, you may just have reached a whole new level of unoriginal television programming.

D.C. novels parallel recent sex scandals

Pity the poor Washington novelist, hunched over his word processor trying to make imagination outfly reality. What invented scenario, what mere contrivance of plot and character, could rival the unlikely characters and improbable events that have saturated the newspapers and airwaves during the last two weeks?

King inks 'X-Files' show; Phair's album due in June

n Film 4 Like Chris Carter's storylines aren't weird enough already! Carter has enlisted the help of some veteran masters of the paranormal to bolster the popularity of the already-burgeoning thriller. So, what happens when Mulder and Scully meet up with horror guru
