East Lansing blues: Spartans win in 1st-place style

EAST LANSING - The importance of the game was clear. The fans knew when it was and who it involved. But as important as the players were, it was the ambiance and the surrounding elements which made for good drama. For weeks, the game was circled in red ink. In this rivalry there is no middle ground and everyone in the state knows it. You grow up hating one school or the other. Michigan-Michigan State is one of those contests that demands the red-ink treatment regardless.

Gutsy 'M' rally falls short, 80-75: Reid's shot misses in final seconds

EAST LANSING - Murphy's Law had nothing on the Michigan basketball team last night. And in the end, the Wolverines could not overcome everything that had gone wrong for them. Despite the absence of an injured Maceo Baston, the early departure of their other big man, Robert Traylor, who fouled out with 6:37 still remaining in the game, and a fast start by Michigan State in front of a rowdy green-and-white crowd inspired by pre-game pep talks from former Spartans Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Greg Kelser, the Wolverines did everything they could to put themselves in position for a miracle finish.

Turco won't play Friday's game

The Michigan hockey team was already going to have its hands full with Michigan State this weekend. Now, for at least one of the games, the Wolverines are going to have even more to worry about. Michigan starting goaltender Marty Turco will not play in Friday's game at Munn Ice Arena, Michigan coach Red Berenson said. Turco may dress for the contest against Michigan State, which is second in the CCHA - just three games behind the Wolverines - but backup Gregg Malicke will be given the nod to start in net.

Bullock, Traylor, Ward score all but six in defeat

EAST LANSING - Without forward Maceo Baston in the Michigan lineup, the already-thin Wolverines were concerned about depth heading into yesterday's game against Michigan State. Following Baston's foot injury, the scoring load was in the hands of Robert Traylor, Louis Bullock and Jerod Ward.

U.S. women's hockey stops Canada, claims gold medal

NAGANO, Japan (AP) - This was no miracle medal. Just a magical one. When the puck sailed into the empty net with eight seconds left and gold was assured for the U.S. women's hockey team, Sarah Tueting leaped in the air and kicked up her padded legs.
