EAST LANSING - For the past three years, the seniors on the No. 3 Michigan State hockey team have played in the shadows of their more successful rivals in Ann Arbor. In their three years at Michigan State, they have watched as their rivals have won three CCHA regular season championships, two CCHA playoff championships, and an NCAA championship.

Cleaves arrested for MIP just hours after big victory

EAST LANSING (AP) - Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves and forward Andre Hutson were arrested on alcohol charges early yesterday, hours after the team's first victory over Michigan in three years. Cleaves, 20, and Hutson, 19, were released Wednesday afternoon on personal recognizance bonds, East Lansing police Lt. Lewis Muhn said.

IOWA CITY (AP) - Kent McCausland scored 16 points and Ricky Davis and Ryan Bowen each had 14 yesterday as Iowa used torrid shooting to down No. 5 Purdue, 88-69, snapping the Boilermakers' seven-game winning streak. Kyle Galloway, making his second straight start, scored 12 points for Iowa (7-6 Big Ten, 18-8 overall), which defeated Purdue for the fourth straight time.

Baseball to open in Texas

Like federal marshals there a few years ago, the Michigan baseball team plans to come out firing when it travels to Waco, Texas, for an opening weekend, three-game series with No. 22 Baylor. Records, Hoosiers may fall this weekend in seniors' last hurrah

Tomorrow, when the No. 13 Michigan wrestling team faces Indiana at Cliff Keen Arena, will be the final home dual meet for senior All-Americans Bill Lacure, Jeff Catrabone and Airron Richardson. The three starters - along with Steve Basmajian and Brandon Howe, who was an All-American two seasons ago - will be honored before the match as part of an annual senior night to salute their careers at Michigan.

Michigan men's track team splits, travels to separate meets to capture NCAA bids

For the first time this season, the Michigan men's track team will be split. The separation will determine whether the sprinters can hold their own without the top distance runners. Michigan's sprinters, along with some of the younger distance runners, will travel down Washtenaw Avenue to participate in the Eastern Michigan Classic tomorrow at 1 p.m.

'M' women golfers to go west for Midwest Classic

The Michigan women's golf team is expecting a good showing this weekend when it participates in the Midwest Classic at the Desert Springs course in Phoenix, Ariz. The Wolverines are coming off a disappointing performance at the Regional Challenge in California last week, where they finished 18th. Sharon Park, who placed 65th in the tournament, was the top Michigan finisher.
