Blue readies for Spartans: CCHA race nears climax

The question of talent versus execution pervades college hockey these days - and this weekend's two-game series between No. 5 Michigan and No. 2 Michigan State will serve as the latest forum for debate. The Wolverines (19-4-1 CCHA, 25-6-1 overall) will face the Spartans (16-4-4, 22-4-5) tonight at Munn Ice Arena and tomorrow at Joe Louis Arena. Both games will start at 7 p.m.

Spartans hope to finish off 'M' dominance

This weekend isn't Armageddon. The world isn't going to end. It isn't the final battle between Good and Evil. But it might as well be. It's Michigan and Michigan State. It doesn't get much more violent or much more intense than these teams' two hockey games this weekend. At Munn Ice Arena and at Joe Louis Arena, everything is going to hit the fan.

Revenge, tourney seed at stake

Even though forward Jerod Ward stands at 6-foot-9, his playing style fits the description of a large shooting guard or slashing small forward. Most of his points this season have come from his improved outside shooting or from easy baskets in the lane.

Tournament bid on line for Blue women

The Minnesota women's basketball team needs a lifeline. Don't look for the Wolverines to throw one to it tonight. The Gophers (1-13 Big Ten, 4-20 overall), who have lost nine straight and 14 of their past 15, host the Wolverines (9-5, 17-7) tonight at 7.

'M' swimmers lead after one day

The quest for 12 in a row has begun. One day in, the Wolverines are already showing signs of why they are the reigning Big Ten champions. Yesterday at the Big Ten Championsips in Bloomington, the Michigan women's swimming and diving team garnered several victories to take the lead going into today's events. Leading the Wolverines was sophomore Shannon Shakespeare. The former Olympian set a new pool record and a new meet record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.

Blue men gymnasts set sights on regionals

With every goal set, there eventually comes a crossroads where one challenge will prove whether the goal is realistic, or if the intensity of the task will kill the aspiration. This weekend, the No. 8 Michigan men's gymnastics team reaches that crossroads when it takes on No. 12 Illinois-Chicago tomorrow in Chicago.

Hockey players erupt

NAGANO, Japan (AP) - Some U.S. hockey players trashed their rooms at the Olympic Village after being knocked out of the Nagano Games, and the NHL was investigating who was responsible for the damage, estimated at $1,000. Chairs were broken, two apartments were damaged by fire extinguishers and one extinguisher was thrown from the fifth floor into a courtyard during the incident, which occurred Wednesday afternoon said Paul George, head of the U.S. delegation in the Olympic Village.

Backup Malicke to start in net

Although there hasn't been any furniture on the ice at Yost Ice Arena during this week's practices, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say the Wolverines have been playing musical chairs. Going into tonight's game against Michigan State, the Wolverines' lineup has a different look than in recent weeks.
