Guild celebrates 25 years at 'U'

To celebrate the Comic Opera Guild's 25th anniversary, the cast of "Orpheus in the Underworld" will attempt to bring the underworld to life. Written in 1858 by French composer Jaques Offenbach, the operetta caused a stir among the Paris elite with its parody of the mythological Hades. Performed with director Thomas Petiet's English translation more than 100 years later the show still has ample ability to entertain.

Unique angle distinguishes 'Palmetto'

Although Volker Schlondorff's "Palmetto" borrows its plot from "Fargo" and to a lesser degree from "Excess Baggage," the film has a unique style that distinguishes it from these other works. Ultimately, it is this style that brings life to an uncreative staged kidnapping premise, making "Palmetto" a flawed but entertaining movie.

Play inverts the norm

As students write their papers and prepare for midterms at the University, exhaustion due to long hours of study becomes inevitable. Many opt to avoid plays and concerts in fear of falling to sleep. But for those who would enjoy an enthralling performance, Performance Network's "Inverted Pyramid" is guaranteed to keep even the most tired student from dozing off.

Now, through the efforts of an ambitious promoter, the Blind Pig is poised to spawn a resurgence of the techno underground that has vanished from Ann Arbor.

When one separates fact from fiction, or compares an NBC program to Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," the truth is that most of the comedies on NBC - or any other network for that matter - are not that funny.

Mowry's 'Guy' needs to get smart

He's a young genius whose jump from fourth grade to high school has turned his family upside-down. No, he's not Doogie Howser. He's 10-year-old T.J. Henderson on the comedy television series "Smart Guy." "Smart Guy," aired on the WB network, stars Tahj Mowry as young T.

'Titanic' sinks record

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Late Monday night, at a theater somewhere in the world, ''Titanic'' became the biggest moneymaker in movie history, breaking the global box-office record set by ''Jurassic Park.'' 20th Century Fox said yesterday the disaster epic has grossed more than $919.8 million worldwide, vs. $913.1 million for ''Jurassic Park.'' And ''Titanic'' did it in just 10 weeks.
