Going out in style: Final chapter concludes fairy tale season

In the beginning, it was just another football season. But the final statistics of the fairy tale year are anything but typical - 12 victories, a trip to the Rose Bowl, a Heisman Trophy winner, coach of the year, and, in the minds of the more than 100,000 fans who packed Ann Arbor yesterday for a parade and pep rally, an undisputed national championship.

Woodson leaves 'M' to go pro

With the suave demeanor and cocky smile that he carried his entire Michigan career, Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson said that he had accomplished all that he could as a Wolverine. For the man who continuously takes down one obstacle after another, the next challenge is duplicating his collegiate success as a professional.

One year later, 'U' community still feels pain of Comair crash

Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the crash of Comair flight 3272, in which all 29 people on board were killed, including LSA senior Arati Sharangpani and Associate Rackham Dean Betty Jean Jones. "When you drive by there, you think about (the crash) all the time," said Grape, Mich., resident Gary Helser. Helser witnessed the plane crash from his kitchen window. "I saw a ball of fire and smoke," he said.

IASA conference inspires unity

The second annual Midwestern Indian American Students Conference drew more than 300 participants to the University over the weekend. Keynote speaker Madhulika Khandelwal, director of Asian American Studies at Queens College, addressed how Indian culture is assimilated into American culture.

Storm leaves 10 dead, many stranded

Members of the National Guards flew over rural areas of the Northeast on Sunday looking for families isolated without power or food since last week's ice storm, and temperatures threatened to drop below zero during the night. Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses still had no electricity across northern sections of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

MSU student missing since first of year

After going out for dinner and drinks in East Lansing on the evening of Dec. 31, Michigan State University student Ryan Getz split from his friends to usher in the new year with his girlfriend. But after finding his girlfriend was not at home, Getz mysteriously disappeared, and friends and family have not heard from him since.

Muslim students observe holy month of Ramadan

For Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan, sunrise and sunset signify more than the passing of another day. Instead, most practicing Muslims spend the days of Ramadan fasting and abstaining from Earthly pleasures. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, extends through Jan. 30 this year. During the religion's holiest time, all Muslims capable of fasting are required to do so.

Study names U.S. most pious country

The percentage of Americans who practice religion is higher than any other nation of comparable economic standing, according to a recent University study. The results of the worldwide study show that 44 percent of Americans attend church every day, while only 27 percent of people in Great Britain, 21 percent in France, four percent in Sweden and three in Japan do the same.

Lansing looks at income tax cuts

LANSING (AP) - Michigan residents pay about $100 more per capita in individual income taxes than the national average, placing them in the top quarter nationwide. That's partly because they make, on average, more than residents in many other states, according to Mark Haas, director of the Michigan Bureau of Finance and Fiscal Policy.

Castro, pope to meet next week

HAVANA - Their portraits are plastered throughout Old Havana - two septuagenarian exporters of revolution, crowd-loving orators and tireless propagators of rival creeds, poised for a long-awaited encounter. The official government picture on walls and popular T-shirts shows Pope John Paul II clasping hands with his expectant host, President Fidel Castro. Another picture, distributed by the Roman Catholic Church, features only the pope and heralds his coming as "the messenger of truth and hope.
