Mike York and Rustyn Dolyny also scored power-play goals for the Spartans (10-3-2 CCHA, 18-3-3 overall), and Dolyny had two assists. Michigan State scored on four of eight power plays.
It was the second straight hat trick for Berens, the first Spartan to accomplish that feat in at least five years. He also became the first Spartan to score four goals in a game since Anson Carter did it against Lake Superior State on Nov. 23, 1993.
Roger Trudeau scored a shorthanded goal for Northern (8-6-3, 10-8-4).
Ohio State 5, Ferris State 3
Hugo Boisevert scored three goals, two in the third period, as Ohio State beat Ferris State 5-3 Saturday.
Boisevert gave the Buckeyes (8-9-0, 11-10-1) a 4-2 lead with his power-play goal at 8:27 of the third period. The Bulldogs closed to 4-3 when Brent Wishart scored a power-play goal with 60 seconds left after Ferris State had pulled its goalie.
But Bosievert added an empty-net goal with eight seconds left.
Jason Seleke and Ryan Root also scored for the Buckeyes. Kenzie Homer scored two goals for the Bulldogs.
Lake Superior 3, Miami (Ohio) 3
Jason Sessa scored two goals, including the game-tying goal midway through the third period, and Rob Galatiuk made 33 saves as Lake Superior tied Miami (Ohio) 3-3 in overtime Saturday night.
The RedHawks (9-4-2, 14-4-2) scored twice in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Alex Kim scored the tying goal 54 seconds into the period and Josh Mizerek scored the go-ahead goal at 6:47.
Ted Laviolette also scored for Lake Superior and Dan Boyle scored for Miami. Dustin Whitecotton had three assists for the RedHawks and Tim Leahy had two.
