Spartans overcome Illini; Hoosiers win state battle

The Associated Press

Mateen Cleaves scored a career-high 27 points, including 17 of the Spartans' first 19 in the second half at East Lansing, as Michigan State went on to defeat Illinois, 68-64

The Spartans (4-1, 11-4) have won seven of their last eight games and retained a share of the lead in the Big Ten with the victory over the Fighting Illini (3-2, 11-7).

Indiana 94, No. 9 Purdue 88

Indiana freshman Luke Recker showed he knew of the fierce rivalry between the Hoosiers and Purdue.

Recker scored a career high of 27 points and had 12 rebounds in the upset victory.

"I've been pretty frustrated the last couple years when Purdue won four straight and five out of the last six," Recker said. "So we were determined to come in here and get a victory, especially on our home court."

William Gladness and A.J. Guyton each added 21 points for Indiana (4-2, 13-5).

Purdue (3-2, 15-4) was led by Jaraan Cornell with 27 points.

NO. 13 Iowa 82, Minnesota 69

The Hawkeyes fell behind 17-2 after seven minutes at Minnesota on Sunday, then shot 69 percent the rest of the way.

Ryan Bowen scored 19 points to lead Iowa (4-1, 15-2), which has won nine of 10 and is off to its best start since opening 18-0 in 1986-87, coach Tom Davis' first season.

Sam Jacobson led Minnesota (0-5, 7-9) with 24 points in his return after missing three games with a back injury. But neither the return of their leading scorer nor the early 15-point lead were enough to keep the Golden Gophers from matching their worst conference start since 1970-71.

Wisconsin 56, Northwestern 33

Playing in the brand new $76.4 million Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., Northwestern trailed 23-18 at the half.

The Badgers (3-2 Big Ten, 10-7) led only 28-26 until a 15-0 second-half run. The Badgers built a 43-26 lead as the Wildcats (1-4, 7-7) went scoreless for more than seven minutes.

Badgers coach Dick Bennett said he was impressed by his team's defensive play.

"I don't recall having a team try this hard defensively in a long time, and I've had the privilege of coaching a number of great defensive teams. The Cats made just one of their first 10 field goal attempts and shot 31.6 percent in the half.
