CHAMPAIGN - The festivities surrounding the Super Bowl may have been out of control, but they didn't have much on yesterday's Michigan-Illinois game here at Assembly Hall. The band played, the dance team was on the floor, and the student section - dressed entirely in bright "Orange Krush" T-shirts - was rowdy and loud as CBS picked up the feed for the start of the game.

(AP) - Mateen Cleaves scored 25 points and DuJuan Wiley added a career-high 15 as Michigan State (6-1 Big Ten, 13-4) defeated Penn State 71-59 for sole possession of the Big Ten's lead. Wiley, who had seven points in the last five minutes, gave Michigan State a 62-54 lead with 2:05 remaining when he converted a three-point play.

Tarheels annihilate Florida St.

(AP) - Antawn Jamison scored 20 of his 24 points in a lopsided first half Saturday as No. 2 North Carolina pounded No. 20 Florida State 103-55, giving the Tar Heels their 28th straight 20-win season. The Tar Heels (6-1 ACC, 20-1) made 20 of their first 24 shots to build a 58-28 halftime lead on the Seminoles (3-5, 14-6), adding to their NCAA record 20-win streak.

Thomas fills big shoes in victory

Michigan guard Stacey Thomas has done fairly well avoiding the dreaded sophomore jinx. Going into yesterday's game against Iowa, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year was averaging 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds. In her past two games, with Pollyanna Johns out with a knee injury, Thomas's numbers have increased significantly.
