In an attempt to enrich campus-wide discussion and dialogue on multiculturalism, the administration is launching an initiative, called Dialogues on Diversity, designed to foster the unique environment of the University.

The School of Literature, Science and the Arts chose diversity as the theme of the Winter '99 semester because of the recent challenges to the University's use of race in its admissions policies in the Law School and LSA. University officials hope the initiative will encourage all University students to discuss and exchange their views on diversity.

Program Coordinator Pat McCune said the initiative's objective is to explore the ways in which diversity affects the University and the community.

Students can gain "an increased awareness of the topics and issues and have a willingness to look to a topic with a new perspective," McCune said.

Although still in the planning stages, McCune said events may include a film series, speakers and panel discussions on diversity.

The diversity committees are still in the planning process.

Marie Ting, a program associate for multicultural initiatives who participates in some of the committees, said the theme semester will open discussion at the University.

"We are hoping to encourage students to think about diversity and consider diversity in an academic sense," Ting said.

The initiative intends to explore the meaning of multiculturalism and true social justice, Ting said.

Ting added that the upcoming semester will bring University students, staff and faculty together to begin a dialogue on campus and learn from one another.

McCune said faculty originally met last semester, drafted a proposal, presented their report to the LSA office and asked for funding. Upon approval, the committee was able receive money from other divisions of the University.

McCune said since diversity is a sensitive issue many may be reluctant to discuss the topic. She added the initiative will hopefully encourage campus and community members to speak their minds and widen their perspectives.

LSA senior Mona Hanna, who helped organize the last theme semester on environmental issues, said they were successful in raising awareness on campus. Hanna added that many students became involved in the cause.

McCune invited any student interested in taking part in the planning for Dialogues on Diversity.

"We work with people all across the University," McCune said.

The theme semester will incorporate the entire University, not just LSA..
