Best defense: AAPD programs reach out to the community

Police officers nationwide often find themselves the subject of criticism, be it from community activists, rap artists or the lawbreakers they apprehend. While some of these complaints are justified, they often overshadow the fine service police departments perform for their communities. Here in Ann Arbor, the AAPD deserves praise for its programs that reach out to the community, and curious residents should participate in some of the offerings.

An armed society: Guns should not become easier to acquire

More Michigan residents may soon have legal consent to carry loaded guns in their cars or under cover on their persons. Pending legislation would make it harder to deny special permits for carrying handguns to people without a history of crime or mental illness. As private citizens wielding handguns are far more likely to cause accidental deaths than to protect themselves, Michigan legislators should oppose this bill and any future attempts to ease handgun regulations.

Prudent spending: Bills will help combat domestic violence

Domestic violence is an issue that too often goes unrecognized. But the federal government is taking action that will aid victims of domestic violence. Two new pieces of legislation will help the victims of domestic violence by giving them another outlet of help within their communities, and it will help law enforcement agencies deal with domestic problems.

Stupidity tries our patience and makes us feel good

For some reason, at a random point in the day, a person will put forth a view so misguided or do something so dumb that I would like to say, "Wow, you are an idiot." I suspect this also happens to you. And if you're like me, you're always polite no matter how trying the behavior.

Everyone gets burned a few times while growing up

For all of us, there's a point in time, or there will be, when we realize we are old. For me, that time came last weekend at a Dave Matthews concert. I was walking around the outdoor venue before the show started with a beer in my hand. Being ever self conscious, I began to notice two distinct reactions of the crowd to my look-at-who-has-a-beer swagger. The first made me feel really young and unworthy of my relatively new 21-year-old status.
