Interim deans recommended
Appointments, search committees, recommendations and other factors accompany the quest to fill the positions of Literature, Science and the Arts and School of Education deans.
University Provost Nancy Cantor will recommend Prof. Karen Wixson and Psychology Prof. Patricia Gurin to the University Board of Regents at its June 18-19 meeting as interim dean of the School of Education and interim dean of LSA, respectively. Pending her approval, Wixson's post will be effective July 1 until a permanent dean is named.
State says yes to 'U' funding
Tuition may be more affordable for University students next year.
That is one possible outcome of the approval of increased state university funding, passed in the Michigan House and Senate early last week.
Gardens add sculptures
Attempting to capture the attention of Ann Arbor residents and add another dimension to its gardens, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens is displaying sculptures by artists from the Great Lakes region.
"With the sculptures, we look forward to bringing a new audience from the community," said David Michener, an assistant curator of the Gardens. The sculptures "will also give visitors another way to enjoy and take advantage of the gardens."

Students say GM strike affects nation, jobs

Study reveals '90s attitude toward marijuana
Marijuana use is up among teens in the 90s because they don not see it is dangerous, said a University study by Jerald Bachman, Lloyd Johnston and Patrick O'Malley.
Drawing on statistics from the Monitoring the Future study conducted by the Institute for Social Research and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the study shows the symmetrical relationship between recent increases in students' marijuana use and the impacts of the perceived risks and disapproval from 1976 to 1996.
