Wolverines are peaking at right time

CHICAGO - In the biggest game of the season thus far - a game Michigan's best player dominated with everything from no-look passes to breakaway dunks - the most memorable moment took place after the sound of the final buzzer. And it didn't even happen on the court.

Gophers grab men's swimming crown

It wasn't supposed to be like this. The Michigan men's swimming and diving team was supposed to bring home its 31st Big Ten Championship banner from Minneapolis and proudly hoist it to the rafters of Don Canham Natatorium.

Lions knock out Blue in overtime

INDIANAPOLIS - Their faces said it all. Long and pale, eyes red from recent tears, dejection painted all over them.

'M' squeaks by twice to finish

NOTRE DAME - The Michigan hockey team went into last weekend having won or lost 14 games by just a single goal - a style of play coach Red Berenson has often called "heart-attack hockey." With the CCHA title potentially on the line, and matchups against two low-fat, easily digestible teams like Bowling Green and Notre Dame, it seemed like the Wolverines would end their heart-attack habits for the last weekend of regular-season conference competition.

Lack of depth holds back men's track

The results of the men's indoor track and field Big Ten championships were no different than the results of the Central Colletgiates, Red Simmons Invitational or any other meet Michigan participated in this year. The distance team carried the load while the sprint squad failed to earn many points.

Lacure, Richardson claim Big Ten titles

With seven of 11 teams ranked in the top 25, including three of the top programs in the country, Big Ten wrestling is clearly the dominant conference in the NCAA. Ranked 16th in the nation, the Michigan wrestling team traveled to Penn State for the Big Ten Championships, looking to redeem a disappointing regular season.

Fisher is far from forgotten, even after Big Ten title

CHICAGO - Brian Ellerbe has just coached the Michigan Wolverines to the first Big Ten Tournament title. He is the man on the bench, running practice, calling the plays, facing the media. He is the man with the sweat-drenched shirts after every game, the man who is scrutinized when the Wolverines play poorly and is rarely praised when they play well.

Emotions run high for seniors in final outing

After a Michigan victory, forward Bill Muckalt is usually all smiles. But after defeating Lake Superior 5-2 in his last regular season home game, Muckalt choked back tears as he and fellow seniors Gregg Malicke, Chris Fox, Marty Turco and Matt Herr were honored for their contribution to Michigan hockey.

Get out the Maalox, fans - it's playoff time

NOTRE DAME - Talking with the general Michigan hockey fan, I've been asked the question, "So, is the hockey team going to do good in the playoffs, or what?" First of all, it's "do well," - not, "do good."

Wildcats destroy Michigan State in finale, 5-1

MARQUETTE (AP) - Rich Metro, Buddy Smith and J.P. Vigier each had a goal and an assist, leading Northern Michigan to a 5-1 victory Saturday over Michigan State. Jeff White added two assists for the Wildcats (15-12-3 CCHA, 17-14-4 overall). Tyler Barabonoff and Bryan Phillips also scored, staking Northern Michigan to a 2-0 first-period lead moments before Metro's power-play goal padded the margin.

More hardware for MVP Traylor

CHICAGO - The table, about three feet off the ground, was only the initial obstacle for Robert Traylor. But the Wolverine center had dealt with adversity before, and this time, problems were of little consequence for the hulking man.

Big Ten Tournament finally a reality: Reviews mixed as postseason tournament sees shares of highs and lows

CHICAGO - The inaugural Big Ten Tournament had its moments, however few and far between they were. Despite two coaches' objections, the tournament finally became a reality this past week inside the United Center - home of Chicago's Bulls and Blackhawks.

Cleaves, Michigan State disappoint

CHICAGO - If there was ever a time for Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves to gain any additional national exposure, the inaugural Big Ten Tournament was his opportunity. In a conference that boasts skilled outside shooters and battlers in the paint, Cleaves stood as the only exciting playmaker in the conference.

Wolverines could be a force in Big Dance

INDIANAPOLIS - As the starting lineups were announced, the Michigan bench kept a nervous eye on the tunnel leading to the court. With the announcer about to call Pollyanna Johns' name, the all-Big Ten center was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, Johns raced onto the court, not even breaking stride as she joined her fellow starters and her name boomed from the PA system.

Wolverines grab awards, but no title

If the Michigan men's swimming team found any solace in its 714-641 loss to underdog Minnesota last week at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, it was in the seven individual titles the Wolverines won. Michigan's domination at the top of most races was no different than the past 11 championships. Four different Wolverines - Derya Buyukuncu, Tom Malchow, Andy Potts and Chris Thompson - took home individual titles, most of them in distance events.
