There were 40 reported incidents of anti-semitism in the state in 1997, up from 26 the previous year - comprising seven instances of vandalism and 33 acts of harassment, threat or assault, the league reported in an annual audit.
Better reporting and increased activity of hate groups accounted for the increase, said Donald Cohen, the organization's Michigan director.
"Distribution of hate materials continues to increase and such groups are proliferating," Cohen said in a news release. "The audit can't determine whether there are more people with hateful attitudes out there, but certainly some are more willing to organize and take action."
At the University last year, the driver of a car tried to run down an alumnus wearing a yarmulke as occupants of the vehicle shouted "Kill the Jew!" the league reported. The man was not hurt.
Nationally, anti-Jewish violence fell nearly nine percent from last year to 1,571 incidents, the League reported. New York state had the most, with 380 incidents.
