A 23-year-old male Ann Arbor resident died yesterday after jumping from the eighth deck of the Maynard Street parking structure, Ann Arbor Police Department officials and witnesses said.
A witness said Stacy Hinds suffered severe physical injuries, but was still alive after landing face-first in the center of the pavement between Score Keepers bar and Borders Books & Music.
Huron Valley Ambulance dispatched a unit at 12:04 p.m. to transport Hinds to the University Hospitals' emergency room. Doctors pronounced him dead at 3:11 p.m.
AAPD Sgt. Larry Jerue said Hinds, a long-time Ann Arbor resident, was not affiliated with the University.
"There was no indication foul play was involved," Jerue said. "He has had psychiatric problems, but we cannot release his medical history."
Hinds was a first-year student at Ann Arbor Huron High School during the 1989-90 school year. He did not continue his secondary schooling in Ann Arbor after that year.
Omas Fregene, an Ann Arbor Pioneer High School student, was standing under the parking structure when the incident occurred.
"I saw him falling sideways," Fregene said. "I could see him floating down ... from the force, he bounced a little off the ground."
After seeing Hinds fall, Fregene screamed for the toll booth attendant to call 911. He then went into the street, knelt besides the man and checked his condition.
"I heard him breathing and a woman working in (Score Keepers) felt his pulse," Fregene said.
AAPD Officer Bill Clock, who responded to the call, said no one accompanied Hinds to the parking structure. Police used Hinds' personal identification materials to identify the body.
Clock said a witness on the eighth deck of the parking structure saw Hinds preparing to jump.
"One person saw him go off the side," Clock said. "They yelled to try to stop him, but he still jumped."
Certified Emergency Medical Technician Lisa Rubin, a waitress at Scorekeepers, said she attended to Hinds until the ambulance arrived at the scene. She said the impact fractured bones all over Hinds' body.
"His face was crushed with a broken wrist and broken jaw and blood was everywhere," said Rubin, an LSA senior. "He was not in respiratory arrest, but he had a very low pulse.
"You never want to move someone in his condition. I was just stabilizing his neck, monitoring his pulse and waiting until Huron Valley Ambulance arrived," Rubin said.
Fregene said he saw the witness running down the stairwell from the eighth floor, and said the witness appeared to be distraught by the incident.
"I saw him running towards the guy. Two people were trying to console him," Fregene said.
