Sullivan and Mortimer named to all-academic team

Michigan cross country runners Kevin Sullivan and John Mortimer added to their long list of awards last week, when they were named to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic team.

In order to qualify, an athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade-point average, and finish either in the top 10 percent of their NCAA regional field or be named an All-American at the NCAA Championships.

Sullivan, a four-time All-American and recent winner of the NCAA indoor mile, was the highest championship finisher to earn the award. He was named the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, and was also Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of th

e Year in 1993, '94, '95 and '97. The senior is majoring in civil engineering and has a 3.508 grade-point average.

Mortimer, who finished second to Sullivan at the 1998 Big Ten and NCAA Regional Championships, was named an All-American and Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1996. The junior is majoring in Architecture and holds a 3.296 GPA.

During their record-breaking 1997 seasons, Sullivan and Mortimer finished first and second overall in six meets.
