Hey Joe: Four teams remain in hunt for CCHA title at Joe Louis

Don't worry. No need to panic. It's just playoff hockey. That's the sentiment that most of the Michigan hockey team shared in justifying this past weekend's nail-biting three-game debacle against Notre Dame in the first round of the playoffs.

Eberwein takes fourth at NCAAs

MINNEAPOLIS - Michigan women's swimming coach Jim Richardson said the 1998 NCAA championships would be fast - faster than the Olympics. He was right. After one day Michigan is in ninth place. Stanford, led by two-time Olympic gold medalist Catherine Fox, is the current leader with a total of 129 points.

'M' wrestlers advance to quarterfinals

CLEVELAND - The Michigan wrestling team advanced three wrestlers into Friday's quarterfinal round, winning seven out of eight matches in the first day of the NCAA Championships. Seniors Bill Lacure, Jeff Catrabone and Airron Richardson each won both of their matches in today's session. Sophomore Joe Warren won his first match of the day before succumbing to Oregon State's Issac Bruce in a close 7-5 decision.

Brady to start in spring practice

Just two months after Michigan's Rose Bowl victory - in which senior quarterback Brian Griese was named MVP - Lloyd Carr is looking to the future. And, for the time being, that future begins with 6-foot-3 junior quarterback Tom Brady as spring practice opens tomorrow for the defending national champion Wolverines.

Tar Heels sour State's big dreams

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - All year long, Michigan State's Spartans made believers out of the Big Ten and the rest of the country by getting timely contributions inside and outside. When one facet of the Spartans' game suffered, another would help make up for it. The formula carried Michigan State to a share of the conference regular-season title and into the NCAA tournament's round of 16.

Hamilton's fall away crushes Washington : Utah climbs over Mountaineers, 65-62

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Richard Hamilton had never made a buzzer-beater in his life, let alone in the NCAA tournament. Connecticut now has two this decade to get to the final eight. Hamilton's rebound jumper in the lane at the buzzer, Connecticut's third shot in the final eight seconds, gave the second-seeded Huskies a 75-74 victory over Washington in the East Regional semifinals yesterday.

CCHA hands out awards at banquet

DETROIT (AP) - Chad Alban, who became the first Michigan State goalie in school history to score a goal, was named CCHA player of the year last night at the conference's annual awards banquet in Detroit. Notre Dame defenseman Mark Eaton was named rookie of the year, while John Markell of Ohio State was named coach of the year.
