CCHA hands out awards at banquet

DETROIT (AP) - Chad Alban, who became the first Michigan State goalie in school history to score a goal, was named CCHA player of the year last night at the conference's annual awards banquet in Detroit.

Notre Dame defenseman Mark Eaton was named rookie of the year, while John Markell of Ohio State was named coach of the year.

Alban, a senior from Kalamazoo, led the CCHA with a 1.63 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. Alban helped the Spartans lead the nation in penalty killing percentage and became the CCHA's all-time shutout leader with 10 career whitewashes.

Eaton, a freshman from Wilmington, Del., led Irish skaters with a plus/minus rating of 10 and contributed 26 points.

He finished second on the Notre Dame squad with six power play goals.

Markell led the Buckeyes to their best CCHA finish since 1984, nearly doubling their point total from a year ago. Ohio State had the CCHA's third best offense and defense.

In other honors: Terry Marchant of Lake Superior State was named best defensive forward, Dan Boyle of Miami of Ohio was selected as best offensive defenseman and Tyler Harlton of Michigan State was chose as best defensive defenseman.
