SPECIAL HOCKEY SECTION: Road to Boston

Drop the puck: Tourney time is all that matters

Yesterday, I was sitting in the NCAA's pre-Tournament media conference, listening to the each of the six coaches speak at Yost Ice Arena. The first things the coaches from North Dakota, Yale, Princeton, Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan addressed were the events of this season. Each discussed his team's progress from the beginning of the season, the recent performances, their goals in the postseason, etc.

Swimming 13th after NCAA first day

AUBURN, Ala. - You can't teach an old dog new tricks. But you can rely on the trusty servant to perform feats it already knows how to do. So, despite the Wolverines' subpar 17th-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay during yesterday's preliminary round, Michigan men's swimming coach Jon Urbanchek wasn't all that surprised with his team's performance after the first day of the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala.

Baseball begins conference season

Neethling leaves 'M' in wake

AUBURN, Ala. - Swimming a championship event can be a tricky thing. You have to swim hard enough in preliminaries to qualify for the finals, but you can't use up all your energy. But what if you save your best for the finals, only to find out that someone else saved even more?

Northwestern shaved points against Michigan

CHICAGO (AP) - Two former Northwestern basketball players were indicted yesterday on charges of shaving points in the school's basketball games against Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin in 1994-95. An FBI investigation produced charges against Dion Lee and Dewey Williams - both starters at the time - as well as two others accused of illegal gambling and another former athlete charged in a separate indictment.

Minnesota grabs NIT title

NEW YORK (AP) - On a day one of its schools was rocked by a point-shaving scandal, the Big Ten couldn't lose in the NIT final. Minnesota gave the league a distraction from Northwestern's problems by winning its second NIT title this decade last night with a 79-72 win over Penn State.
