New supplies: Proposed bill would help funding for the arts
The state House Tax Policy committee recently approved a bill that, if passed by the Michigan Legislature, will allow Washtenaw County residents the opportunity to vote in favor of taxing themselves to support the arts. This bill, similar to ones passed for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, is an excellent medium for residents to continue and expand their support of the arts.
Misplaced emphasis: School violence overshadows other issues
When two Arkansas boys opened fire on their middle school classmates and teachers in March, news reports of the monstrous assault ignited America's fears about the safety of the nation's schools. The country's anxiety only intensified last month when a 14-year-old Pennsylvania student fatally shot his teacher at a school dance. In the wake of the tragic stories, some Michigan lawmakers have begun a crusade to tighten school safety.
Controversial definition: Merriam-Webster should not redefine slurs
A new debate brews over the use of racial slurs. The focus of concern is not about who uses these words of hatred, but rather whether these words should be included within the listings of America's dictionaries. A petition exists to have the Merriam-Webster Company either remove or rephrase its listings for the word 'nigger.' The various versions of Webster's dictionary describe the word as being a term for a black person and an offensive slur.
Shirt-tags provide life's greatest, subtle lessons
I celebrated my father's birthday last week, with the required cake, ice cream and presents. I wanted to get him a gift he could use, so I bought him a shirt made by famous designer Tommy Hilfiger.
Motivation: elusive for a student even in its definition
Webster's defines the word motivate as "to provide with a motive; actuate." Well, this really tells me nothing. Would it be too much for Webster's to actually give the unmotivated slacker writers of the world some juicy, big-word-filled descriptions of terms they wish to write about in describing their sorry conditions?
