After eight memorable years in Ann Arbor, Associate Vice President for University Relations Lisa Baker announced her resignation effective July 1.

University President Lee Bollinger said Baker's decison was not unexpected.

"I have known for some time she was wondering what career path to take," Bollinger said. "I fully understand and support her."

Baker said she needs to take a break from her position at the University to spend more time with her three-year-old daughter and her husband.

"This is not something you do without a lot of thought," Baker said. "It seemed like the right time to do it."

Baker said the University holds many meaningful and important memories, which she will cherish for the rest of her life.

"It's a wonderful job. It's been a wonderful experience," Baker said. "The University of Michigan is such a great place to work."

As associate vice president for university relations since 1994, Baker acted as spokesperson for the University and oversaw news and informations services in conjunction with presidential and marketing communications.

Before coming to the University, Baker spent 10 years working in Washington in government and media relations.

Baker's announcement follows the resignation of her immediate superior, Vice President of University Relations Walt Harrison, who is leaving the University to serve as the fifth president of the University of Hartford.

Julie Peterson, director of news and information, said she has worked closely with Baker for a number of years.

"Lisa is great to work with," Peterson said. "I am going to miss her dreadfully."

Peterson described Baker as being "wonderfully talented."

Baker said she has established many working relationships and friendships with faculty and staff at the University over the years.

"I have really enjoyed working with students," Baker said.

Baker said she anticipates working again, but currently her top priority is spending time with her family. Baker said she is grateful that she and her husband are financially secure, allowing her to take time off.

"I do plan to work again," Baker said. "Eventually, maybe not the same type of job. There are a lot of things I enjoy doing."

Peterson said Baker's job is very demanding and requires long hours.

"She is very good at what she does," Peterson said, adding that Baker has other obligations that are important to her.

Bollinger said he plans to delegate the duties of the vacated positions according to the capabilities of the replacements. He added he will not rush the decision since finding the right people is important.

"I tend to make decisions on the basis of the qualities of the people I find," Bollinger said.
