Penn State defense looms for 'M': Last game before crucial home stretch not exactly encouraging

Riding a six-game winning streak held together by bubble gum and twine, the Michigan football team knows now is the time for a little soul-baring. It's the '90s, and while Michigan coach Lloyd Carr may not exactly have read "I'm OK, You're OK," to his team, the Wolverines have been open and honest about their, ahem, less-than-potent running game. No need to hide it; their ground game on Saturday simply didn't get the job done.

Parents' influence extends far beyond home

Throughout last week, the members of coach Red Berenson's Michigan hockey team probably were cleaning their rooms and maybe piling up some dirty laundry for some special guests - their parents. Either love them or run away in horror when you see them coming, but parents have a major effect on a college student's life when they're around. The team's Parents Weekend was no different this year.

'M' hoops hopes the Swiss miss tonight

The "fab frosh" have arrived, but will inexperience result in a disappointing season for the Wolverines? The first test comes tonight at Crisler arena. The Michigan women's basketball team will face the Swiss National Team in its first exhibition game of the season.

Belkin optimistic as tournament nears

The Michigan soccer team has been building momentum for the Big Ten tournament all season long. And coach Debbie Belkin's squad is hoping that its flair for the dramatic, seen most recently in Sunday's win, can provide the team with the boost it's looking for entering Friday's opening round.

'M' offense suddenly absent after weekend

Now is not a good time for the Michigan women's soccer team to suddenly lose its scoring touch. Not in the final week leading up to the Big Ten tournament.

Carras pleased with young team's season

The young Michigan men's golf team took another big step in their growing process, firing an 880 three- round total, and finished in 11th place in the fall season's final tournament at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Colorado State won the tournament using a one-under-par 283 in the final round to come from six strokes back and finish with a score of 860, edging Nebraska by four strokes.

Kentucky players to sit out rst four games

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Three Kentucky men's basketball players will sit out the Wildcats' first four games, including two regular-season games, under suspensions announced yesterday by coach Tubby Smith. The suspension of forward Myron Anthony, guard Ryan Hogan and center Jamaal Magloire had been expected since June, when Smith said all three would be punished for misdeeds off the court. Smith waited until the day before the Wildcats' exhibition opener to announce the details.
