The University alumnus had no way of knowing he created a classic.

Blues on the Brain: Inuence of genre is impossible to miss
When three-decade blues mainstay B.B. King hits Ann Arbor next week, he will be bringing the past, present and future of his musical genre with him. Music, like any other art form, can be viewed as a continuum: an infinitely changing media, within which genres are continuously being warped and hybridized in order to produce new genres, thus perpetuating the continuum.

AAPD, DPS kick bike patrols into high gear
The Ann Arbor Police Department and the University's Department of Public Safety are quickly finding that two wheels may very well be better than four. Bike cops have increased substantially in number in recent years; the number of AAPD certified police cyclists swelled from four in 1993 to 66 this year. DPS now has 25 certified bike cops, said AAPD spokesperson Kathleen Vonk.

Indy label Gadfly appeals to the strange, unusual
In the cutthroat and unforgiving music industry, there are few - if any - record companies that can be described as noble. Mainstream labels control most of the popular market. Many of the nation's small-time independent labels, however, offer at least some credibility to an otherwise ruthless business.

Main Street may fill Ann Arbor's entertainment void
Dave Watkins, the head bartender at the jazz club Bird of Paradise, offered one explanation: "Students want to go no further than the Diag, or they just want to hang around South U. I just met a guy who graduated and hadn't even heard of (Bird of Paradise).

A world of art is not a world away
The Detroit Institute of Art, the fifth largest fine arts museum in the country, retains a commanding international painting collection ranging from prehistoric to contemporary eras. With special exhibits and an impressive display of all art forms, the DIA can provide something to interest every taste and level of expertise, from the novice admirer to the serious art critic.

Stupidity season
It is with a heavy heart that I begin this week's column. A recent experience has taught me that a new and terrifying plague is besetting mankind even as you read this. This plague is subtle, so subtle, in fact, that it escapes the notice of all but the most astute observers, deftly infiltrating the human species and slowly destroying it. I name this plague Stupidity.

Life Imitates ... Life?
On the afternoon of Oct. 15, I opened the New York Times to the Op-Ed page to discover a brilliant piece by Arthur Miller about the causes and effects of the Clinton/Lewinsky fiasco. In his Times contribution, Miller addressed the notion that the recent right-wing witch hunt that has begun in Washington is not unlike the witch trials conducted in the Salem of yesteryear.

The List

Crucial Conict is much more than just a one-hit wonder
One-hit wonder: three small words that every artist in the music business dreads to hear. It is the antithesis of everything they strive for musically. They don't want it attached to their names, because it is a kiss of death that few, if any, have been able to shake.

11-05-98

HOME| NEWS| EDITORIAL| ARTS| SPORTS| ARCHIVES|

©1998 The Michigan Daily

Letters to the editor
should be sent to:
daily.letters@umich.edu

Comments about this site
should be sent to:
online.daily@umich.edu
