Let Ellerbe surprise you - PRANAY REDDY : Reddy or Not

Purdue Pete gets revenge shot

A Boilermaker, if you live outside West Lafayette, is a shot of liquor, usually whiskey, downed with a mug of beer. It's also the official name of Purdue's sports teams. But Purdue's basketball team might have another treat best served cold on its mind when it plays Michigan - revenge.

Sound familiar? Badgers full of guards

In a conference chock full o' guards, Wisconsin fills the bill just fine. With a core of four guards returning from last year's squad, including senior Ty Calderwood, who missed all of last season due to injury, the Badgers look to improve on their ninth-place conference finish.

Knees one of the keys for Penn State

Try as he might, Penn State coach Jerry Dunn is going to have a hard time shifting the focus of his team's 1998-99 campaign away from injuries and onto the season at hand. Even with 6-foot-11 center Calvin Booth - the returning Big Ten defensive player of the year - in the mix, Dunn knows the success of the Nittany Lions relies heavily upon the recovery of a couple of valuable knees.

Elderly Eschmeyer to lead Northwestern's charge

You could tell he hated it. It was written all over his face - a cross between anguish and boredom that just screamed, 'Get me out of here!' But there was no escape. Evan Eschmeyer was surrounded by reporters. A whole table-full of them. Tape recorders, notepads, and television cameras were everywhere. They all wanted a piece of one of the few big men left in the Big Ten.

Schottenstein + Scoonie = success?

What do you get when you cross one of the biggest names in college athletics with a brand-spanking new arena? Ohio State is about to find out.

Size matters, but smaller is better: Nobody picks on these little guys

Who's the premiere college basketball team in the Metro Detroit area? Michigan, right?

Backcourt bombers

"Great topic," Ellerbe says, reaching across the table that separates him from his inquisitor. His large hand finds a scarlet-and-white book and flips through it. He grins, then he points. Right there, under the heading of 'Field Goal Percentage - Career' in the Rutgers basketball media guide, Ellerbe's name tops the list.

Time to shine

It was pretty impressive to see from the stands. In section 113 - the Michigan section - of the United Center, the play turned a lot of heads. On their way to winning the inaugural Big Ten tournament, the Wolverines showed the fans in section 113 some spectacular stuff.

'Dear Mama': By Pranay Reddy

From a distance, the tattoo resting on the right shoulder of Michigan forward Josh Asselin is an eye-catching mix of color and shape. A closer look reveals an interesting amalgamation of a biohazard symbol, a basketball, and in smaller writing, the initials L.A.A. Surrounding the entire piece is the inscription, "Dear Mama, You Are Appreciated" - a direct quote from a song by late rapper Tupac Shakur. Underneath the inscription, the years '1948-1996' are lightly etched.

Squeeze Play: By Rick Freeman

Being an optimist, Brian Ellerbe would say that his glass is half full. But most Michigan basketball fans, steeped in pessimistic tradition, won't even say the glass looks a third full this season.

Ellerbe: Guards are best around

They don't wear tights and they don't wear capes and, well, Louis Bullock doesn't look a bit like Adam West. But if the Michigan basketball team is going to be successful this season, Bullock and sidekick Robbie Reid just might have to do their best impressions of Batman and Robbie.

Cameron fun, but not for every game

As storied as the Duke basketball program is, and as storied as the team's rivalry with Michigan has been since the Blue Devils broke the hearts of the Fab Five in the 1992 NCAA championship game, this season, it might not be the same. But that was the popular belief before Michigan shocked the then-top-ranked Blue Devils at Crisler.

Towson relies on defense, pressure

Towson basketball is a no-nonsense business. Unfortunately, as of late, the winning has been about as rampant as the nonsense, which is to say, not much.

Meet the Wolverines

Ellerbe and new staff a perfect fit

One of the most sought-after jobs in the country. An incredibly talented squad. Hundreds of screaming Crisler fans. But one thing he didn't have was time.

'M' soccer advances with 4-2 win

No one expects a 5 year-old to accomplish a lot. But that's exactly what the Michigan soccer team disproved yesterday afternoon. The Michigan soccer team is only in its fifth year of existence, but it has already captured a Big Ten title, established itself as one of the top teams in the country and yesterday afternoon, the Wolverines won their first NCAA tournament game, 4-2, over Xavier.

Cohesion is key to recent success In college, no matter how great the athlete, he or she cannot carry the team alone. The Michigan soccer team has learned a great deal about playing as a cohesive unit in the second half of the season. This reason is why it has become one of the most dangerous young teams in the tournament.

Wisconsin football? Only for the cheeseheads

This is the time of year Madison is the most beautiful. Trees are bare. Pipes are frozen. Winds are howling off the two lakes, whipping automobiles into the air. Bars are full. The cheese-buying season is in full swing.

Field hockey's fate sealed in tourney

An old metaphor attested "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades," and while the wordsmith probably wasn't talking about the NCAA field hockey tournament, he might as well have been. For the past two years, Michigan has excelled in the regular season and has advanced to the Big Ten championship, but received no bid to the NCAAs.

'M' just can't seem to shake bad luck

volleyball team have encountered bad luck this season, and this weekend shouldn't break the trend as the first game is on Friday the 13th.

'M' just can't seem to shake bad luck Bad breaks, unfortunate occurrences and just plain bad luck have had a hand in the Michigan volleyball team's season so far. Therefore, it would stand to reason that the Wolverines open up the second half of a four-game road trip on Friday the 13th.

Lawrence will be important for repeat

The Michigan men's cross country team is going into this weekend's NCAA District meet with one goal on its mind - extending the season. "We're going down there to qualify for nationals," said Michigan coach Ron Warhurst, recently voted the Big Ten coach of the year for the fourth time. "We're really just looking to nationals."

NCAAs mean revenge

In any sport, few things are as satisfying as revenge. Teams may wait an entire year for one opportunity to avenge a loss to a hated rival; the animosity becomes more intense if that rival employed questionable tactics in order to win.

Muskegon tourney all about experience

The younger half of the Michigan wrestling team hopes to gain some extra experience this weekend when it travels to Muskegon for the Ben McMullen Open. The freshmen-and-sophomores-only event is an open tournament format, meaning the Wolverines will have to fend for themselves this weekend. Because of NCAA rules, collegiate athletes are not allowed any assistance from, or any affiliation to, respective schools for scrimmages.

'Big old puppy dog' Dayne throws his weight around in pursuit of Big Ten title

Driving up Interstate 90 into Wisconsin, you would notice the usual farmland, cowfolk, giant signs that scream "cheese." As you approach Madison, however, the signs change. They say "Now entering Dane County."

Video game tourney right on money - Mark Snyder : The Grind

From the beginning of the planning, finding a location in Ann Arbor for the spitting grass and grinding blocks of a college football game wasn't going to be easy. The swarm of players would be enough to contend with, let alone the promotion and marketing that would need to go into the event. But on a campus world-renowned for its gigantic football stadium, the location had to be perfect.

After craziness, Big Ten is back atop unpredictable heap

Big Ten football is a mystery to probably everyone in the country. Year in and year out, top teams and top players put up huge numbers and yet the conference never seems to get any national respect. Even last year, the Big Ten's team had to share the national title with some overrated farm boys with an average IQ less than their average points per game.

The only team worse than the lowly Nanooks? The once-almighty Bucks

What's going on with the crazy CCHA this season? After the first month, surprise Notre Dame shares first, while Ohio State has fallen off the roof to the bottom of the conference. In a conference where anything and everything seems to be happening, the Buckeyes find themselves with a worse record than Alaska-Fairbanks.

'M', Big Ten All-Stars to face U.S. team in Evanston

The top swimmers in the Big Ten are about to find out if they can stay afloat against the nation's elite. This weekend at Northwestern, a team consisting of the best swimmers from all the Big Ten schools will go up against the U.S. National Team at the Big Ten All-Star meet. The swimmers will try to beat the best and will participate in community service projects, too.

Confused about Michigan's Bowl chances? Look no further

With two games left in the Big Ten season, college football's bowl picture is as cloudy as ever. Michigan's early-season woes are all but forgotten, now that the Rose Bowl is once again a distinct possibility. At the same time, Michigan's early-season woes are not
