Germaine, Boston lead Ohio State to victory over hapless Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY (AP) - David Boston caught two of Joe Germaine's three touchdown passes and Joe Montgomery scored on an 80-yard run as No. 7 Ohio State bounced back from a stinging loss to beat Iowa 45-14 Saturday.

Boston, who became the Buckeyes' career receiving leader, and Germaine saw to it that Ohio State (6-1 Big Ten, 9-1 overall) didn't stumble again after losing its No. 1 ranking because of a 28-24 loss to Michigan State.

The Buckeyes were far from perfect as Germaine threw two interceptions, Michael Wiley lost a fumble and Brent Bartholomew shanked a punt deep in his territory.

Iowa (2-5, 3-7) capitalized on only one of those mistakes and Ohio State came up with 11 sacks against the struggling Hawkeyes. Iowa has lost four straight.

The Hawkeyes need to beat Minnesota next Saturday to avoid their worst record in Hayden Fry's 20 seasons as coach.

No. 19 Penn State 41, Northwestern 10

Eric McCoo ran for 127 yards and turned his own fumble into a 57-yard touchdown as No. 19 Penn State defeated Northwestern 41-10 Saturday, as the Wildcats finished their conference slate winless.

On his bizarre touchdown run, McCoo broke one tackle and cut outside, then fumbled up the sideline. But he kept running, caught the bouncing ball in stride 15 yards downfield and sprinted in to put Penn State up 24-3.

The Lions (4-2, 7-2) bounced back from a 27-0 loss to Michigan last week to beat Northwestern for the third straight time.

Three years removed from its Big Ten title, Northwestern (2-9) finished 0-8 in the conference.

Kevin Thompson was 8-of-20 passing for 170 yards and a touchdown for the Lions. He also ran in a touchdown, but threw two interceptions for the second game in a row.

Indiana 20, Minnesota 19

Antwaan Randle El, the first quarterback in Indiana history to rush for 100 yards in four seperate games, passed for one touchdown and ran for one as the Hoosiers defeated Minnesota 20-19 Saturday.

Randle El, who had a career-long rush of 50 yards, accumulated a career-high 143 yards rushing while completing just 4-of-17 passes for 39 yards.

Indiana (2-5, 4-6) overcame deficits of 12-0 and 19-7, taking the lead for good on Randle El's 9-yard run in the third quarter.

Missed kicks by Adam Bailey were costly to Minnesota (1-6, 4-6). Bailey, who had made 44 consecutive extra points since 1996, missed his first two attempts and also missed field goal tries of 35 and 29 yards in the first half.

The winning touchdown came after Minnesota's Luke Leverson fumbled a punt and Greg Yeldell recovered at the Minnesota 36. Two consecutive passes from Randle El to Tyrone Browning moved the ball to the nine. Randle El then highstepped into the end zone after breaking through the line.
