'Grease' goes to new dimension

It was the typical high school prom, complete with couples dancing close and chaperones smiling and sipping punch in the corners of the dance floor. Typical, at least, until a heated debate broke out between a football player and a rebel who was usually more likely to be found under the bleachers smoking than at any school-sanctioned activity.

Complexity runs wild in 'Blood Wedding'

"If you only see one Lorca play in your lifetime, you must see 'Blood Wedding,'" said Robert Knopf, who will premiere his first directorial effort for the University stage tomorrow night at Mendelssohn Theatre. Knopf, a new University theater professor, transferred to the University from Purdue this year.

Five fab divas take over the stage in 'Alice'

As the publicist for VH-1 will tell you: Divas rule. For those of us who agree and can't get enough of fantastically talented women, we should be happy to discover that we have our own share of divas right here in Ann Arbor. Roll out the red carpet and regal fanfare - the kings of groove have arrived. Medeski Martin and Wood, the royal masters of the modern organ trio, will hold court to the booty-shaking masses at the Michigan Theater tonight. Deeply rooted in the improvisational world of jazz, yet delving often into the realm of greasy funk, MMW has, over the past eight years, carved itself a niche at the very top of the hipster youth groove scene.

Predictability makes Lamb novel boring: I Know This Much is True

Wally Lamb, a highly acclaimed writer, has recently released his latest book, "I Know This Much Is True." Though it has received much praise and is even part of Oprah Winfrey's book club, it simply does not deliver. It is the story of Thomas and Dominick Birdsey, two identical twins born on Dec. 31, 1949, and Jan. 1, 1950, respectively. They are twins who were born in different halves of the century and led extremely different lives.

'Celebrity' promotion

Miramax Films is hosting a special promotion for its new film "Celebrity," the new Woody Allen flick, at Rick's American Café (611 Church St.). The film stars none other than the Oscar-snubbed (and rightfully so) Leonardo DiCaprio, Gretchen Mol and Kenneth Branagh.
