Glass' music parallels radical Beat movement

When you hear the words "classical music," you often think of a large orchestra being led by a short little man waving a stick. Sometimes, certain melodies will spring from your mind's ear, recalling some of the more famous classical tunes, such as Mozart 's "Eine Klein Nachtmusik" or the four dark chords of Beethoven's Symphony No.

Ann Arbor band cruises home for Blind Pig show

"We're not a Detroit band, we're an Ann Arbor band!" said Chris Peters in response to rumors of Getaway Cruiser establishing a home base in Detroit rather than Ann Arbor. Peters is guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and one of the two workaholic Peters brothers in Getaway Cruiser. The group will play a show at home tonight at the Blind Pig as part of its whirlwind U.S. tour. "What happens is if you get out of the area, peopl e associate you with the closest big city so people think we're from Detroit.

Poetic tribute regales

Ann Arbor has some good karma on the way tonight as three enormous entities in the music industry - Philip Glass, Patti Smith, and R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe - assemble at Hill Auditorium to pay musical and spiritual homage to the late legendary poet All en Ginsberg and raise money for local Tibetan Buddhist organization Jewel Heart.

Mr. White's Confession

Exhilarating, frightening and extremely intriguing, Robert Clark's new novel "Mr. White's Confession" is a tale no one should miss. The story opens as Wesley Horner, a hardened police detective, is simply waiting to die, his existence empty and unrewarding. As in all detective thrillers, a murder abounds.

'Antz' izn't just a kid'z cartoon, it'z a romanze

Everyone knows Woody Allen likes younger women, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that in his latest movie he's seeking Sharon Stone. Well, sort of. "Antz," which stars Allen as the voice of Z and Stone as the voice of Princess Bala, is essentially the story of boy ant meets princess ant. Boy ant falls in love with princess and, they fight and live happily ever after. It's a classic insect romance.

Fox mystery drags on

About 2 1/2 years ago, "X-Files" creator Chris Carter had another vision for another show. It would deal with weird things just as "X-Files" does. It would have more dealings with the religious and the occult. Finally, an F.B.I. agent would still be invol ved, except he would be a loner.

Korn shows little value; others shine

Korn's "Family Values" was one of the most eagerly anticipated shows this fall. The show had been hyped by concert promoters, and performing bands alike, as an arena show with massive production quality and showmanship unlike anything seen in recently.

'Sister' starts at the 'U'

There are two new students on campus this fall. Most of you probably recognize them, but it's doubtful you can tell them apart. Tia and Tamera Mowry are the stars of the WB Network's bread-winning sit-com "Sister, Sister." The show is about separated-at-birth twin girls, Tia and Tamera, who find each other just in time to spend their teenage years together. The show is set in Detr oit and stars the Mowrys along with Jackee Harry ("227") and Marques Houston (of the singing group "Immature").

Artists challenge reality

In the real world, clocks don't melt. But reality is kind of boring that way. We're all stuck in this world, forced to conform to the laws of both nature and society. How do we free ourselves from this seemingly inescapable and utterly boring realism? Jus t add a prefix and imagine the possibilities.
