Stipe charms A2
On stage at Hill Auditorium stage at 3:45 p.m. Friday afternoon, a beaming Michael Stipe tip-toed up behind his close friend and gently tapped her on the shoulder.
Patti Smith turned around, screamed and threw her arms around him, as both had just arrived in Ann Arbor to sound check for the evening's benefit performance for Jewel Heart in memory of Allen Ginsberg.
Emotions prevail at Ginsberg tribute
It rocked. It rolled. It tugged at the heartstrings and it dazzled the intellect. Yep, the show this past Friday at Hill Auditorium was truly something to behold as three larger-than-life musical veterans - Patti Smith, Philip Glass and Michael Stipe - gave a rare impromptu collaborative performance in the memory of late poet Allen Ginsberg and for the benefit of local Tibetan Buddhist organization Jewel Heart.
'Avenue' grooves A2
"Avenue X: the a cappella musical," which opened under the direction of Darryl Jones on Sept. 24 at the Performance Network, is unique in its genre for two distinct reasons: the show is performed completely a cappella, and this is one of the few musicals that incorporates the music into the story.
Sun Volt kicks up unique sound
It's hard to tell whether Son Volt plays country music or not. When a band includes a banjo, lap steel and fiddles in its music, one might be quick to judge. Country or not, Son Volt continues to prove that it knows how to make music, no matter what the genre.
