U.S., allies debate economic woes

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bickering broke out yesterday between the United States and its rich allies even before the ink was dry on their action plan for combating a widening economic crisis that has already pushed a third of the world into recession.

Crisis not likely to affect 'U' investments

Although recent fluctuations in the U.S. stock market ate into the endowments of several major colleges across the nation, the University probably won't suffer such great losses. University Associate Vice President and Treasurer Norman Herbert said the reason the campus can remain calm is the broad range of the University's investments.

Spam causes trouble

Spam - it's not just a processed lunch meat anymore. During the past few weeks, many University student e-mail in-boxes have been flooded, or spammed, with hundreds of e-mail messages.

Anti-klan ralliers agree to trial date: Klan protesters question motives for counter-rally arrest

Five of the 21 people arrested for protesting a Ku Klux Klan rally on the steps of the Ann Arbor City Hall this past May agreed to go to trial at a pre-trial this past Friday. The five defendants - Thomas Doxey Jr., Philip Vandevoorde, Zachary Thomas, Robin Alvarez and Michael Faqua - reported to the Washtenaw County Courthouse on Friday for a pre-trial.

Bookstore employees say Cliffs Notes are not big sellers on campus

Ask English professors what irritates them most, and somewhere near the top, among Websites distributing critical essays, would be the yellow-and-black plot summaries known as Cliffs Notes. English Prof. Michael Schoenfeldt is among those whose dander is up. Before giving a lecture on Chaucer last week, Schoenfeldt reviewed common forms of plagiarism, then turned his attention to Cliffs Notes.

University President Lee Bollinger is scheduled to participate in a national press conference Tuesday in Washington D.C. The results of a national poll on the country's attitudes toward diversity in higher education are scheduled to be released during the conference.

Mini-courses offer students new classes, alternative activities

Ballroom dancing, holistic health and bartending are just some of the subjects available to students this term through the University Activities Center's mini-courses. UAC mini-courses coordinators added new classes this term including resistance training and holistic health to the old favorites.

Serbs aim to end strife

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) - Serbian authorities, in their latest effort to head off NATO missiles and bombs, installed an interim government in Kosovo on Saturday aimed at "normalizing conditions" in the rebellious province. Zoran Andjelkovic, the man appointed by the Serbian Parliament to head the 18-member Interim Executive Council, told the new members at their first session in the Kosovo Parliament building: "We have to defeat the terrorists and work for the benefit of all our citizens.
