House approves inquiry

WASHINGTON - For only the third time in the republic's 210 years, the House opened a formal impeachment proceeding yesterday against the president of the United States, and its largely party-line vote signaled a rancorous investigation ahead.

Hockey draws interest

The familiar sounds that fill Yost Ice Arena on game nights - the rhythmic cow bell "Go Blue" cheer and the chants of supportive students - could become louder if hockey interest is kept high this season. After being dealt two stinging blows - the all-time high season ticket prices and the plummeting sales of student tickets - the debut of the Michigan icers Saturday still bought out the vivid interest in hockey that stimulated discussion of adding more seats to the arena in the future.

After a year of insufficient interest by rushees, the University chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority was closed Wednesday night by its national organization. The closing of the chapter was not a shock, said Delta Zeta President Meredith Weiss.

The University's School of Business Administration's MBA program dropped two spots in BusinessWeek's biannual rankings to fourth in the nation. University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business received the top honor.

WASHINGTON - Partisan wrangling between Congress and the White House over key budget issues intensified yesterday as President Clinton vetoed the agricultural appropriations bill and both sides reported slow progress in ironing out differences on other spending measures.

City, 'U' collaborate on State St. Project

The commitment of both the University and the City of Ann Arbor combined to create the new State Street Project, an 18-month collaborative study intended to plot a course of development and support the street's diversity. The approximately $1.3 million project is an effort involving the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority, the State Street Association and the University.

LSA senior nets game show spot after reading casting advertisement

LSA senior Eric McCutcheon is hoping he will soon be "ready to solve the puzzle." That's because McCutcheon left last night for Los Angeles to be a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune. McCutcheon said he ended up on the show by accident. He was reading through one of his father's magazines when he saw an advertisement seeking contestants for a soap opera theme show.

Notes: Student's wallet stolen from Bursley room

A student's wallet was stolen from his room in Bursley Residence Hall early Wednesday morning, Department of Public Safety reports state. Between the hours of 12 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., the victim said that he did not lock his room and left his room a couple of times.

GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) - Geoffrey Fieger hammered Gov. John Engler's environmental record yesterday, saying the two-term Republican had allowed developers and industry to trash the state's natural resources. Campaigning in scenic northern Michigan, the Democratic nominee released an environmental policy statement that accused Engler of weakening the Department of Natural Resources and making the Department of Environmental Quality "an advocate and protector of polluters.

Memorial service this week for prof.

The Department of Classical Studies will hold a memorial service this weekend for Prof. Glenn Knudsvig, who served the University for 35 years. The service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union.

Attorney General race heating up

DETROIT (AP) - The battle between the candidates to replace Frank Kelley for attorney general went in a new direction yesterday, with both camps touting endorsements from influential groups. Democrat Jennifer Granholm announced the endorsement of a coalition of police and corrections officer unions. Republican John Smietanka picked up the endorsement of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, which often supports Republican candidates.

Judiciary Committee begins witness list draft

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House Judiciary Committee began drafting a list yesterday of potential witnesses in its impeachment inquiry, but lawmakers said they preferred waiting until after the November election to hold hearings. Sources close to the committee said it is likely to seek testimony from former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and her former friend Linda Tripp; Clinton's personal secretary, Betty Currie, and friend, Vernon Jordan, and Deputy White house Counsel Bruce Lindsey.

Representatives support Democratic proposal that would have stalled impeachment inquiry process

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michigan's 10 Democrats in the U.S. House were united yesterday in voting against an impeachment inquiry that would make President Clinton subject to an open-ended investigation into whether he should be removed from office.

The real vote on impeachment will be Nov. 3: A partisan process

The historic 258 to 176 vote to launch an open-ended inquiry into President Clinton's actions will go down in history books as the second impeachment investigation this century. But the other incident, when the Judiciary committee investigated Richard Nixon, was almost unanimously supported by both Republicans and Democrats in a 410 to four vote.
